sLOVEnia - The Perfect Valentines Day Getaway

Ranked #13,913 in Holidays & Celebrations, #241,455 overall

Imagine a place with LOVE in the name ... Is there a better place for a Valentines vacation?

Don't just imagine, come see it for yourself. I can't imagine a better time for a visit, than the Valentines day? Forget about the roses, heart-shaped chocolates and everything painted in red. Forget about the cliche gifts you have been buying and receiving for all your life. Do something new, exciting and adventurous.

Grab your girl/boy, buy a ticket and fly over. I promise, you will have a time of your life. You can even contact me and I will give you a short tour if I'll have some time to spare.

A Gem

I wanted to start out with a beautiful photo of a part of Slovenia, that would first make you read my lens and then make you visit us. But there was a problem. The problem is, that Slovenia is so beautiful, that there are hundreds of gorgeous photos available. In the end I chose a photo of Bled Lake, which is coincidentally one of the most beautiful parts of our country. I will get to Bled later on, for now you can simply enjoy this photo of it.

We Slovenians like to brag that our country is the only one, where you are an hour drive away from anything. You can go for a morning swim in the sea and climb a mountain in the afternoon. You can go for a morning walk in the plains of Prekmurje and alpine skiing after lunch in one of our ski resorts. You can go shopping in Italy in the morning and enjoy yourself in one of our wonderful spas for the rest of the day. I think you get my point - it is a small country, but it has everything you can imagine for a perfect holiday.

Island of Love

An island of love in a country of love? Sounds like a perfect Valentines day.

Island of Love

This is not just some random island, but an actual island officially named the Island of love. It is located in the eastern part of the country, near the town of Beltinci in the Prekmurje region. The village itself is called Izakovci and the island is in the Mura river.

There are several different stories about the origin of this name, but the most popular is the simplest of them all. It is said that anyone that visits this island falls in love with it.

Besides going for a romantic walk along the island, there are a few things worth seeing there as well. There is a floating mill there, which is one of the only two remaining floating mills on the river Mura. There is also a miller museum there. You can also ride a float to the other bank of Mura. Old style.

The island is all about the purest possible nature that you can't help but fall in love with. Speaking of love, you shouldn't miss sitting on the lovers bench that is there for couples to have a few romantic moments together.

A fun fact about Slovenia

Population of Slovenia: Almost exactly 2.000.000

Not much, but we're fun to hang around with ;)

Lake Bled - a perfect wedding place

Bled Wedding

No guide about Slovenia is complete without mentioning Lake Bled. In my opinion, this is the most beautiful spot in the country and probably in this part of Europe. Now, don't get me wrong. I am originally from Slovenia, so you probably think I'm biased, but there are a few not so biased sources that claim the same thing.

CNN named it one of 10 most beautiful lakes in the world
Telegraph.co.uk is full of praise

Lake Bled comes complete with a fairy tale island, a cliffhanging castle and a gorgeous lakeside promenade.

Considering this is a Valentines day special, we can't go pass the romantic aspect of the lake. Are you passed the romantic strolls and and want to make a commitment? Well, Lake Bled is a very popular place for weddings. I included a promo video below this lens, so make sure you take a look at that.

Ljubljana - the Capital of Slovenia

Ljubljana (lyooblyanah) is not only our capital, but it is the largest city in the country and (like most capitals) the cultural, political and economic center of Slovenia. Coincidentally it is also almost in the geographical center of the country, making it easily accessible and close to any other Slovenian city. By car, you can reach it in under 2 hours from whenever you are, as long as you are within the borders of Slovenia.

With the population of around 270.000 people it may be by far the biggest city in the country, but for visitors from abroad it is usually just the right size to explore it properly in a day or two. And there are many things to see in Ljubljana, make no mistake about it. The city is at it's most beautiful in the spring. A stroll along the Ljubljanica river is something you will never forget and it just might be the most romantic walk of your life.
