Sabretooth has operated as a mercenary for hire, however his vicious streak has also seen him kill for personal pleasure. He is recognised as Wolverine's arch nemesis, with the two characters sharing a long and complex history. Like Wolverine, Sabretooth was a product of the Cold War supersoldier program Weapon X. Upon early meetings, Sabretooth saw Wolverine as a direct rival, with the bitter friction between the two leading to a lot of bloodshed.
A brief history of Sabretooth
Like Wolverine, Sabretooth's past is clouded in mystery, with his memories having been tampered with by a number of secret organisations, including Weapon X. Sabretooth's real name is thought to be Victor Creed, and his strongest memories of childhood involved being abused by his father whilst held in his parents' basement. Whether or not this memories are actually accurate or not is open to conjecture. In the early 1910's, Sabretooth apparently raped and killed a young Indian girl named Silver Fox. At the time, Silver Fox was in a relationship with Logan (Wolverine). This sparked the beginning of what would become an ongoing feud between Wolverine and Sabretooth. Unbeknown to both parties, Silver Fox would survive this attack only to re-enter their lives in the years to come.
In the 1960's Sabretooth worked for the CIA run, Team X. Team X also included Logan (who by this time was known as Wolverine) as well as Silver Fox. At this time none of the three had any recollection of their encounter years earlier, as they had been implanted with false memories. It was during this period that the hatred between the two characters would grow. For years Wolverine would be unable to beat Sabretooth in combat, and just to prove that he was the better of the two, Sabretooth would show up on Wolverine's birthday each year, and each year, beat him to within an inch of his life.
Sabretooth also began an involvement with the mutant shape-shifter, Mystique. Mystique seduced Sabretooth, and became pregnant, with their child born without mutant abilities. Their child would grow up to be Graydon Creed, an anti-mutant activist.
Next, Sabretooth is recruited by the Weapon X program. He does receive the standard Weapon X memory tampering, and he is found to be more prone to telepathy than his counterpart, Wolverine. It is also unclear whether or not Sabretooth underwent any enhancements.
Corresponding to his first appearance in comics, Sabretooth would later kidnap a famous attorney, leading to his first altercation with The Immortal Iron Fist.
Soon after Sabretooth would join Mr. Sinister's Marauders, who were responsible for the massacre of the Morlocks.
Sabretooth, fitted with an inhibitor collar, was briefly a member of X-Factor, however he would later turn on them and escape. Further run-ins with the X-Men followed, including a battle between he and Wolverine, with the winner to take the role of Death, one of Apocalypse's horsemen.
Recently, Sabretooth would once again work with the X-Men, after he sought refuge for a group of super-beings called the Children of the Vault. Again Sabretooth turned on the X-Men, and in an attempt to escape from Cable's Island Providence, would battle Deadpool, before Cable telekenitically threw Sabretooth out to sea.
The Death of Sabretooth
Under the control of a mysterious being known as Romulus, Sabretooth's intelligence is stripped away, leaving him in a wild animal like state with no ability to reason or use language. In this state, Sabretooth kills Feral, which leads to Wolverine tracking him down. Wolverine, with the Muramasa Blade, a sword forged with part of Wolverine's soul, and the only weapon capable of negating the pairs healing factor, attacks Sabretooth. During the battle, Sabretooth manages to break the control of Romulus long enough to beg Wolverine to kill him. Wolverine is more than happy to oblige, he decapitates Sabretooth and leaves his body in the snow.
Whether the person killed by Wolverine was the "real" Sabretooth or not has become the matter of some debate. Time will tell...
