Take a Local Yarn Store Tour

Welcome to Sacramento!

What's a gal [or guy] to do in Sacramento when all they can think about is yarn? Visit the Local Yarn Store of course.

If you are a fiber artist and plan on visiting the Sacramento region why not consider doing a Local Yarn Store Tour. Better yet, why not plan on visiting one of the many Fiber Art Festivals in the Northern California Region.

What is a LYS Tour?

It is small local yarn shops coming together for a day or two in a fun and entertaining way. You get to see all your local shops plus you get to see new yarns, new patterns, new tools and even learn a little bit more about fiber arts in your area.

It is a time to chat about yarn, shop for yarn, feel yarn, oohhh and awww yarn - It is a Yarn-vacation.

You get a passport which is stamped for each shop you visit [no purchase necessary] which enters you into a drawing for prizes.

How to Plan a LYS Tour

Hop onto Google or Map Quest

FriendsFirst you will need to know the Local Yarn Stores in your area. Call each one and let them know you'd like to do a LYS tour. Most have heard of these and will be glad to participate.

Second, Choose the theme you would like to have. Maybe it is Valentines Day and you'd like to feature 'Love' patterns or maybe you are a group of charitable knitters and would like to feature Hat patterns or Baby patterns - You might even feature a Local Designers Work - it really doesn't matter just choose a theme that will appeal to a number of people.

Third, have the businesses decided what they will offer. Most of the time it is a free demonstration or free pattern. When you visit the stores they will usually have sales on certain products [fiber, yarn, tools] specifically for the LYS Tour participants.

Last, you will need to make a map of the tour. The easiest way to do this is to hop onto google maps or MapQuest and map your course. Map it out to fit your group and their locations. You don't all have to visit the same store at the same time but if you are anything like me, shopping for yarn with friends make it all the more enjoyable.

I don't know if I've ever seen a local yarn store (I have been to local scrapbook stores though). Giving this an angel blessing for the hard work you put into this.

Thanks for the Blessings~**~ Local Yarn Stores are for crochet and knitters what a scrapbook store is to a scrapbooker - or maybe more like a candy store to a kid!

No, I have not but I know of at least one small yarn store in our area that always has hard to find and cool yarn that something like this would be really great for them. I didn't know there was anything like this. I think it's an awesome idea.

I've only been a part of one by accident when I stopped by a store one time on a vacation. It was fun and I look forward to participating in another one. Thanks for dropping by.

Fiber Festivals in Northern California

Another option

Learning about everything Yarn, Fiber and even Shearing Sheep. You can participate in a festival which can teach you techniques, you can enter competitions, spin, weave, knit, crochet and just about anything related to the fiber arts. [Of course you can fit in SHOPPING too]

Here are two that I plan on visiting at least once in my lifetime. [hopefully]

local fiber producers, craftsmen and artists are brought together to display and sell their wares, demonstrate their skills and educate the visiting public about natural fibers and their importance to our community and culture.
Lambtown USA
Lambtown USA festival - a celebration of the
lamb industry in Dixon California.

Local Yarn Stores vs Craft Stores

That is the Question

Which do you prefer? I prefer the Local Yarn store but my budget likes the craft store better.

Local Yarn Store

MiddleSister says:

The local yarn store has textures and fibers that the big chain craft stores don't.

LissaKlar says:

For yarn, gotta go local, that's where the best and hard-to-find yarn is.

Craft Store [Michaels, JoAnns, etc.]

Brookelorren says:

At this point, I suppose I don't know enough for it to make a difference. I like all sorts of crafts, so I suppose a craft store. But a yarn store would probably be fun to see!
