The Snowball Dance on Leap Year
Each year since 1937 a day-long event in Lil Abner on a November Saturday is Sadie Hawkins Day; the unmarried women of Dogpatch pursued the single men. If a woman caught a man and dragged him back to the starting line by sundown, he had to marry her. Sadie Hawkins herself was the daughter of one of Dogpatch's earliest settlers, Hekzebiah Hawkins.Â
Only on the leap years was there a similar tradition of allowing women to propose marriage on February 29. Now, the title "Sadie Hawkins" is used with men, such as the Midwest, get shown up by the ladies on their team. Â
Once located between Jasper and Harrison, Arkansas, Dogpatch, U.S.A. visitors could meet their favorite characters, enjoy numerous rides, and take in the scenery of the beautiful Ozark Mountains.
As Mayor of Dogpatch, Hekzebiah Hawkins decreed "Sadie Hawkins Day" and held a footrace in which the unmarried girls pursued the town's most eligible bachelors. Without a countdown, Hawkins' father intervened and used his power to snare her a man. He lined up all eligible males and shot off his gun.
In 1952 Abner reluctantly proposed to Daisy Mae to emulate the wedding of his comic strip ideel, Fearless Fosdick. Once married, Abner became relatively domesticated and the two produced their only child, Honest Abe, in 1953. The event became an annual event in the strip during the month of November, lasting four decades.
Al Capp also came up with the idea for a Sadie Hawkins dance, which captured the imaginations of American college kids. The craze spread throughout the '40s and '50s, and continues today. Traditionally, Sadie Hawkins is an occasion when women take the initiative in inviting the men of their choice to a date. Each year the Girl Scouts sponsor a father-daughter dinner-dance they call the "Sadie Hawkins Day Dance."

Shmoon- rabbits of the bunch
The Shmoo first appeared in the strip in August 1948
According to Shmoo legend, the lovable creature laid eggs, gave milk and died of sheer esctasy when looked at with hunger. The Shmoo loved to be eaten and tasted like any food desired. Shmoon Love the Legend of Dogpatch
Anything that delighted people delighted a Shmoo. Fry a Shmoo and it came out chicken. Broil it and it came out steak. Shmoo eyes made terrific suspender buttons. The hide of the Shmoo if cut thin made fine leather and if cut thick made the best lumber. You could never run out of Shmoon (plural of Shmoo) because they multiplied at such an incredible rate. Ironically, the lovable and selfless Shmoos ultimately brought misery to humankind because people with a limitless supply of self-sacrificing Shmoos stopped working and society broke down. Dog Roses

Saint Bridget and Saint Patrick
Anecdotes of the saints
According to ancient lore, back in the 5th century, Irish St. Bridget convinced St. Patrick that women should be allowed to propose marriage at least once day a year. St. Patrick relented, but with a catch-he ordained that women would have the opportunity only every four years-on leap day.Back in roman times, the calendar addressed this problem by adding an extra 22 day month every few years. During the times of Julius Caesar, this system backfired, as the seasons no longer occurred during the same months they once had. Caesar solved this riddle by getting rid of the extra month, and adding a extra day every few years. Monks further refined this system in 8AD when the calendar was changed from having a leap day every three years to every four years.
The tradition continued, and in 1288 Scotland passed a law that gave women the legal right to propose on leap day. And if the man refused, he was fined! During this century, this time-honoured tradition has been melded with pop culture, as leap day became Sadie Hawkins' day. However, when the monks and astronomers in the 1500s took a look at the sky even closer, they found out that our planet's journey actually takes a few minutes under 365 and 1/4 days.
To make up for this correction, Pope Gregory XIII declared in 1582 that leap day could fall on any year divisible by 4, but not 100, except when the year is divisible by 400. Hence, years with 00 in them can't be leap years-unless the year is divisible by four.

The Common Year in Four Seasons
A year which is not a leap year is called a common year. In fact, the Earth takes slightly under 365 1/4 days to revolve around the Sun. The Gregorian Calendar the current standard calendar in most of the world, adds a 29th day to February. Centennial years (those ending in -00), receive the extra day only if they are evenly divisible by 400. Thus 1600, 2000 and 2400 are leap years but 1700, 1800, 1900 and 2100 are not.The Julian calendar adds an extra day to February in years evenly divisible by four. The Iranian Calendar is based on 8 leap days ever 33 years. In order to get a closer approximation, it was decided to have a leap day 97 years out of 400 rather than once every four years. So, in the last millennium, 1600 and 2000 were leap years, but 1700, 1800 and 1900 were not.
In addition, the Hebrew calendar has postponement rules that postpone the start of the year by one or two days. These postponement rules reduce the number of different combinations of year length and starting days of the week from 28 to 14, and regulate the location of certain religious holidays in relation to the Sabbath. In the Chinese calendar the leap month is added ensures that month 11 is always the month that contains the northern winter solstice. This means that the vernal equinox moves a day earlier in the calendar every 131 years.
