Safari, Nature and Wildlife Viewing Vacations

Here is a selection of articles and reviews of safari holidays and wildlife viewing vacations in various parts of the world: Africa (Namibia and Botswana), Borneo, Canada, USA and Asia...

Lots of photographs, travel tips, advice and recommendations, hotels places to go and things to see. Monkeys in the rain forests in Asia, big cats and the "Big Five" in Africa. Classic safari vacations to the more obscure adventures in more remote parts of Africa. Giant lizards in Indonesia: Komodo Dragons etc.

Okovango Delta, Botswana, Africa

Botswana, The Perfect Safari Destination

Botswana is one of the most enchanting places I have been on my many wildlife adventures. The unusual tranquil watery Okavango Delta, where huge quantities of water run into the desert from rivers, forming a delta. The water goes nowhere and just evaporates into the desert, but remains long enough to support a huge variety of animals. The Chobe National Park also provides excellent safari and game viewing opportunities: The Big Five etc. An excellent place for a camping trip.

Namibia, Africa

Namibia, Southern Africa

The Kalahari Desert, Huge Sand Dunes and Etosha National Park

Namibia in Southern Africa, is another wonderful safari destination with excellent wildlife viewing, especially in Etosha National Park. Namibia has fewer tourists making it, generally, a higher quality experience. The biggest sand dunes in the world are at Sossusvlei and the Kalahari desert also makes Namibia a different and special experience. Self-drive holidays are easy here or you can go on with safaris accompanied by experienced guides.

Monkeys

Wildlife Viewing in Borneo

Borneo has some of the most endangered rain forests in the world, which must be protected. Very rare proboscis monkeys and orang utans swing through the canopy of what is left of these wonderful jungles. Several sections of the rain forest have been protected and there is a lot of work being done to rehabilitate orang utans who have been made homeless by the increased logging and palm oil production in the area. A wonderful, if tragic place to visit.

Amazon Jungle, Brazil

The Amazon and Rio Negro are accessible from the town of Manaus ("The Paris of the Tropics") in Northern Brazil. Fish for piranha, watch pink fresh water dolphins and caiman alligators or enjoy boat trips through the jungle.

Komodo Dragons, Indonesia

Komodo Dragons live on a small group of islands in the Indonesian archipelago a few hours by plane from Bali, near the island of Flores. These prehistoric dinosaurs wanders around the islands and even swim between them in search of tourists to eat (well there is only one recorded case of a Swiss tourist being eaten, but there's always the chance) They are a kind of enormous monitor lizard.

Allegedly the best place in India to view tigers in the wild.

Digital SLR Cameras

Useful equipment to take on a safari adventure. An SLR is preferable over a compact, especially if you will be spending time in jungles with poor lighting.
