Guide to Being a Safe Driver

Ranked #7,323 in Cars, #392,722 overall

The Cold Hard Facts

Each year, over 250,000 people are injured on the UK's roads. Whilst this does seem like a lot (and it is), it has dropped considerably over the last 20 years. In 1984 for example, the amount of people injured on the UK's roads were nearly 325,000. However, whilst it's great that the figure is dropping, it would be great if it dropped lower. We all know that a car is an incredibly dangerous weapon if misused. However, having a car is pretty essential these days, so how can you ensure you're a safe driver? In this lens, I will look at various things you can do to make you a safe driver!

How To Pass Your Test

Unfortunately, there are two schools of thought when it comes to passing your driving test - the best sign you can get that shows you're a safe driver. The first believe that the more driving practice you get, the better you will become, and therefore the better driver you become. This means dragging the learning to drive process out over a long period of time, maybe even years.

The second school of thought is to learn as quickly as possible. This intense learning can be more beneficial as most of the learning will be done with a trained instructor, and it leaves very little space to pick up bad habits. Financially as well it is cheaper, but there's less space to spread payments as you'd have to attend an intensive driving school. However, some intensive driving schools do offer payment schemes in increments.

We here at this lens aren't in a position to say which is the best (generally speaking: confident drivers would prefer the second method, whereas nervous drivers prefer the first), so it's a case of seeing which one you prefer.

Mobile Phones - How To Use Safely on the road

The most useful of items, particularly in an emergency, is a mobile phone. Society has become accustomed to using these wonders of modern technology anywhere in the world.

Unfortunately, using one whilst driving can be lethal. Here are some tips though to use one safely on the road.

  1. Don't - Obvious one really, but even a ringing phone can be a distraction. If you don't need your phone on, switch it off/onto silent.
  2. Get your friend to answer the ringing phone - If the phone rings with somebody else in the car, get them to answer it. That way it's not distracting you, plus the person who rang you will not be left cut off.
  3. Pull Over In A Safe Place & Answer Phones - If you can, pull over at a safe point and answer the phone. Most phone have a missed call function, so if you do miss a call, you can easily return to it at a later date.
  4. Install a hands free car kit - Installing a hands free car kit can mean you can answer calls safely, and are particularly useful for businessmen who are constantly driving. Hands free car kit installation is best done by a professional company. Please remember to keep concentrating even when on the phone as well, even when you're on the phone.

The Pass Plus Scheme

In the UK, you can also take the Pass Plus scheme. It was introduced in 1995 to try and combat the rise in accidents on the road with young people involved. The scheme - approved by the DSA, RAC & The AA - improves the driving skill of youngsters by improving their experience driving in difficult conditions.

There is no real test, you cannot fail the pass plus scheme. Instead you simply have to satisfy the examiner you're safe in those conditions. Furthermore, certain things which are a minor or even a major during the test are ignored here.

The course is a minimum of six hours to complete, and by the end of it you are given a certificate which entitles you to cheaper insurance from a number of leading insurance firms.

It's well worth seeking pass plus tuition from a number of reputable driving schools.

Interesting lens. My personal view is that the UK Driving Test is only there to give you a driving licence. You learn how to drive once you've passed. As a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists I now feel I am a better and safer driver, which is why I created my Advanced Motorist lens at www.squidoo.com/cambridge_iam, and I'll be featuring your lens there.
