Watching the Rat Race: Making a Living Without Living in a Box - Literally.

Ranked #20,256 in Business & Work, #377,943 overall

Life is tough. Here's help.

Somewhere along our consumerist path, modern culture hatched a thought regarding the definition of success. From the egg laid post-WWII, a fledgling idea of one 40 hr workweek road to success was born. The fledgling was nurtured, fed the choicest tidbits in the 80s at adolescence, and left the nest a fully feathered paradigm not long after. Staring over your shoulder, it roosts in a grey cloth box and whispers that this, this is success. I disagree. I believe in life outside the cubicle. And I'm getting my eyes pecked out over it.

To those brave enough to ruffle society's feathers, I offer up freely something I wish I had been equipped with at the beginning of my journey - an atlas.
Here you will find alternates to status quo success - ways to make a living, ways to live, skills to explore, free resources, ideas to try, and what works, what doesn't, what is overlooked, and what is pure snake oil scam. I give only one caveat - my research spans the spectrum. Some sources are lazy-easy to bring in an extra bit of holiday shopping money. Others require real work and dedication. Everyone starts these endeavors differently; different situations, abilities, needs. Like an actual atlas, I can only show the maps. Even when a person plots their route, they still have to drive the roadtrip. I keep an open-inbox policy; feel free to e-mail me at any point for questions, clarifications of content, or with new resources to add. I am always up for a good rant session as well. It's a frustrating world.

Full credit given to anything shared, provided it's a REAL resource - no spam people, please. I'm trying to do something good here. If anyone notices anything amiss with any site or source, please let me know ASAP so I can take proper action.

Some of the Basics

Aka, the 'Get it quick & easy stuff'.

Verified! Yay!I know when I first started research, the first thing I needed were a few simple ways to snag extra cash - or at least help me keep what I had. Here's a basic list of things to know, places to go, and the info on each. There are referral links to sign up in the box below; that's up to you. There is usually a decent bonus for both parties; I'll let you know what for each link. If you decide to sign up to anything using my referral - thank you. I'll return the favor on any you find that I don't have.

Ok, so, since we're online anyway:

The granpappy of goodies: Swagbucks. Seriously, I don't know what took me so long to find this site. The gist is, it's a Google search that rewards you. Using the google engine, a search off of their site or toolbar - or even your regular search bar once you set it up - will at random times award anywhere from 5 to 50 "swagbucks". These can then be redeemed for prizes, cash via paypal, or giftcards. The $5 Amazon card is by far the best Swagbucks prize there is; I'll add a link to the math below. The picture I have added is proof of an extra $20 earned without even trying.

Referral link in pic - and the bonus is good. We both get what the other wins - ie I win 5 searching, you get it and the reverse. This adds up... I search a LOT. (Limit at 1000 but 1000 SB = about $11-$12 in Amazon cards.)

I'll let you explore that today... more later!

How is the current economy changing the way we earn?

The recession will cause a complete shift in how success is measured and, with luck, help us all be a bit more kind to each other. Most common phrase for the next 2 years? A sympathetic "I've been there." for those still playing catch-up.

Etsy = Awesome

For any and all creative types

Etsy rocks. The entire site just has a feel good vibe. Also, fees are quite reasonable.

Amazon Affiliation

Useful and a basic step.

What: Becoming an Amazon Affiliate
Why?: Potential extra cash with minor effort - or lots of potential cash with major.

This is one of several places I use my affiliation - go! shoo! Make a lens with one of your own.... (after you shop on mine - lol. Cheesy grin.) More info in text below.

eBay - Cliche for a reason

Has it been touched in 3 months? No? SELL IT.

Ok, the how of this online money maker is obvious. Here's a couple of points to remember however -

1) Check prices on Amazon, Etsy, etc before you list on eBay along with rates and fees. Better to spend 10 minutes on research than sell a rarity because you were unaware. Also, the rates and fees of each of the big 3 (eBay, Amazon, & Etsy) vary wildly and shift according to season at times. Do your homework.

That said...

2) General rule:
eBay = quick maybe $, great catchall, specials and seasonal promos a plus
Amazon = slow but definite $, books & games specialized - especially books, affiliate program nice
Etsy = Crafty, creative, unique, handmade, etcetcetc

What are your favorite sites to earn at?

Ok, I'm going to tentatively say that posting referral links, legit ones, is ok. BUT the first, and I mean the FIRST spam link I see - that's it. Logged in members only and everything has to get approved by me. For now though, let's play nice, k?

I love Squidoo for earning, as well as MySurveys.com and Inbox Dollars, although that last one can take quite some time before you make any money. Still worth it!

Ditto ditto on MySurveys & Inbox Dollars. For those interested, there's a referral link to InBox Dollars in the link list and anyone is welcome to contact me for an e-mail referral to MySurveys. Thanks Josh!

LissaRhys' Challenge of the Week

Bet you a dollar that you won't donate a dollar.

There should be no rules regarding the generosity of others, nor any guilt or gimmicks. Well..... how about no banal gimmicks?

Recently gamers broke the site counter at ExtraLife - by donating their time gaming: button clicks add up..

Guitars For Vets (G4V) provides 6 free private lessons and a new acoustic guitar to military Veterans at VA medical centers. The private lessons are then followed by group sessions that provide a forum in which community is fostered.

Motley Fool - The financial side of things

Because you need to know moolah to know how to make it.

It's a good idea to have a grasp of the realities of economics if one is going to attempt to make an alternate living. The Motley Fool is one of, if not the ultimate, financial resource.

An entity in and of itself: iTunes

Music to keep you going

iTunes is one of the more unique ways to go about earning. The venue is huge, with millions of members. You can look at this one of two ways - either as a potential audience or a way to get lost in the "shuffle". (Bad, bad, pun. Grin.)

I am an eternal optimist - i choose the former.

Enjoy what I've picked out for my readers!
