Alcohol
As well as drinks and some foods, alcohol can be found in products such as mouthwash and make-up remover. Alpha Hydroxy Acid

Bentonite
A type of clay which expands when it absorbs water. It is used in many types of foundation and may clog pores, suffocating the skin.

Collagen
Found in many skin care products, collagen cannot be absorbed by the skin and instead forms a layer which may suffocate the skin.

Elastin
A protein similar to collagen which is also found in many skin care products and has similar effects.

Fluorocarbons
A gas or liquid commonly used in hairspray which can cause respiratory problems.

Formaldehyde
A highly dangerous carcinogenic product which can be found in an alarming number of cosmetic products.

Lanolin
Derived from wool, it can be found in many cosmetic products and lotions. It often causes skin irritation and has also been connected to cancer.

Lye
A carcinogenic substance which is used in soap.

Mineral Oil
Used in many lubricants, it creates a blocking layer on the skin which can cause it to suffocate.

Paraphenalene Diamine
A principal ingredient of most dark hair dyes, it has been strongly linked with cancer, particularly non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

Propylene Glycol
A type of mineral oil that is used in industrial antifreeze and hydraulic fluid, it is also used in skin and hair products to lock moisture in. As it does this by blocking pores and preventing the skin from breathing this is highly dangerous.

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS)
A harsh detergent which is used in engine degreasers and car cleaning products. It is a well-known skin irritant and has been found to cause harm to the eyes, heart, liver and brain. There are high levels of SLS in most shampoos, bubble baths, shower gels and toothpaste.

Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES)
The alcohol form of Sodium Lauryl Sulphate. It is slightly less irritating than SLS but potentially just as harmful. Both chemicals are suspected of causing cancer.
