The Internet is a great place for kids

Children are smarter than we give them credit for. They are tuned into the Internet in ways we could not have imagined when we were small. The Internet is populated with great sites for kids. There are fun activities, homework help and other projects on the Internet that all kids can enjoy. Some of them are projects that get the kids out of the house and away from the computer.

We have a 9-yr-old child and constantly monitor the sites he visits. This lens was created for him. It will not stop him from surfing the net but with all his favorites in one place, there is less need. There is homework help and other educational sites that he enjoys. There are video games.

All of these sites have been parent approved.

Safe kid-friendly search engine and other reference sites. All of them easy to use.
KidRex Kid-safe search engine
Search engine powered by Google that filters out many undesirable websites. KidRex also has a parent page for more information on how it filter the websites before they get to the child's computer.

NetSmartz

NetSmartz
Site for parents and teachers to teach Internet safety. There is valuable information here. Kids don't always get that they do things that make them vulnerable. One of the things that caught my interest is who you friend. The point here was that you don't want to friend the person you have a crush on and then talk about having bad breath. Silly but a very important point.

Homework Fun

It's more fun to play with homework assignments than to do the boring drills

Homophones, spelling words, math drills and others can be taught with fun activities. Lots of good stuff here to make it interesting.
Homophones Game
This is a simple and fun game that 2nd grader's and up can enjoy. The smaller kids may not get them all correct but the older kids should. It's quick and easy to follow.
Fact Monster: Online Almanac, Dictionary, Encyclopedia, and Homework Help — FactMonster.com
Fact Monster is a free reference site for students, teachers, and parents. Get homework help and find facts on thousands of subjects, including sports, entertainment, geography, history, biography, education, and health.

Parents will never have to answer another question. Send the kids to look it up. It will help with their spelling and the answers they are looking for are probably here. Coolest site ever!
KidsClick! Web Search
Sort of an on-line reference guide for many topics. There is even a section on monsters.
Spelling & Vocabulary Website: SpellingCity
Teaching spelling is easy with SpellingCity.com. Input spelling lists for your students to use for free spelling help. Students can learn spelling words, practice spelling tests, and play fun spelling games. Keep track of your spelling list curriculum, share spelling lists, and get ideas for teaching.
This site is not completely free but the parts that are still work well for the kids.
Addition Trick
This page describes a simple mathematical magic trick where the mathemagician predicts the outcome of an arithmetic problem.

Science Fun

Just because it's a website does not mean that the kids have to sit at the computer

Being on the computer does not mean that the kids are stuck staring at a screen. Websites can take them to other places where they didn't expect to go. Science can be fun and there are some great ideas here.
Solar S'mores
Food science is still science. The kids can build a solar oven and make their own s'mores.
Science Museums Science Fair Project Ideas Science Education
Try Science is a science education resource for children, parents and educators. We feature information for kids on science museums, science fair project ideas, dinosaurs, and other science discoveries.
Slime | Burbmom.net
Nicholas just LOVES science experiments! He is always asking me if we can do an experiment of some kind. If I don't have one for him, he will often do his own

This is so important to check out the sites your child uses. There is a lot of great stuff out there (but some harmful sites too).
I've lensrolled it to Cute Cats - Favorite Webpages for Kids.
