2007 Baby Crib Recall

In December of 2006, the Graco Aspen 3-in-1 baby crib was recalled, but in more recent news, a baby died when the slats came out of the crib and his head became stuck, causing the baby to suffocate.

Now, although the Consumer Product Safety Comission originally recalled the crib because of the same risk with 14 other injury reports, the company remarketed the baby crib.

Cribs with wooden mattress supports and the model number 8740KCW SC and serial numbers 2803 SC to 1605 are included ALL in this recall. The model and serial number are printed on the envelope attached to the mattress support.

Please take note of the baby crib recall as several babies and infants have suffered injuries and a few have died from the cribs.

    Choosing a baby crib

What to look for when picking out a baby crib for your infant

  • The distance between slats must be no more than 2 3/8 inches (6 cm) to protect infants from falling out and toddlers from trapping their heads between the slats.
  • The side rails that lower should have at least two locking devices to prevent older babies from releasing them.
  • When a side rail is lowered, its top should be at least 9 inches (23 cm) above the mattress support. To protect older babies, at its lowest position, the top of the raised side rail must be at least 26 inches (66 cm) above the mattress support.
  • If the crib has corner posts, they must be either flush with the top of the headboard and footboard or very tall - over 16 inches (41 cm). Anything in between is a potential strangulation hazard.
  • Get the firmest mattress you can find. Don't rely on manufacturers' labels - test it yourself. This is extremely important because soft mattresses may play a role in sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
  • Be sure that the mattress fits snugly in the crib. This keeps a baby from slipping in between the mattress and the crib sides.

When looking for used baby cribs, evaluate them with extra care. There may be too much space between slats, or elaborate cut-outs in the headboard and footboard that can trap a baby's head. A crib made before 1978 may have a finish that contains lead, so a crib that has been in the family for generations may not be the best one to use!

Don't feel goofy if you take your tape measure the store of thrift shop when looking for a baby crib. You appearing to have a loose screw to some people means you're being a safe parent to your child, taking everything into precaution.

SAFETY NOTE: Check all screws and hardware regularly and tighten them if necessary. To prevent suffocation, never place soft bedding or soft toys in your baby's crib. Remove crib gyms and mobiles devices once your baby starts to pull up in order to prevent entanglement. To prevent your baby from using the bumpers to try to climb out of the crib, bumpers, you should remove them when your baby starts to stand. Also, never place a crib near a window, because your child can become entangled in window blind cords.

    Infant Beds

An infant bed (commonly referred to as a cot in British English and a crib, cradle or stock) is a small bed specifically for infants, generally up to 3 years old.

Infant beds are most common in North America, Europe, and Australia.

Many people in these countries, and in other parts of the world, do not use separate infant beds, and instead co-sleep (babies sleep in the same bed as the parents).
