Unfortunately, these days, the internet world opened in front of a child is dangerous and might have a great impact upon him.

Internet - information resource

It's true that Internet is a resource of information essential for study, the easiest way to keep up in touch with friend and their activity, providing opportunities to improve your life, have some fun, enhance your education or pursue business interests. Children are often enthusiastic Internet users.

Why need parents to protect children online?

Online predators are the main problem that appears while children surf the Internet. The target for predators is approximately 77% children under 14.

Another reason why a parent should offer children protection on the web is because a child having fully access to any Internet resource can download or open inappropriate web sites, logging in chat conversation with strangers, or revealing private information about the place he lives.

Lots of children use the Internet to play games. On TV there are movies that are not recommended for a certain age category while on the Internet parents must be aware because it's more difficult to choose only the best for safe surfing.

Games also represent an attraction for children. But choose together with your child a less aggressive one, because these games have great impact and influence on your child. Their behavior can change, becoming more aggressive with you and with others, it can get irascible and isolating himself from the real world.

Protecting children on the web means also to protect your personal information. What I want to say is to watch over your child's shoulder and take a good care if you allow him to use your credit card for online shopping. This is a security problem concerning even you as an adult not talking about your children.

How do online predators act and how do they choose the victims?

Most children who fall victims to online predators spend a lot of time online, particularly in chat rooms. Online predators attract the victims through the use of attention, affection, kindness, and even gifts. They will know very well which are the children's hobbies and interests and will be aware with the latest music. Some of them engage in inappropriate conversations with children immediately which might include harassment or irritation.

Statistics say that one in five U.S children who regularly log on to the Internet, have received an unwanted sexual solicitation via the Web. Solicitations were defined as requests to engage in improper activities and talk, or to give personal information.
More than that, only 25% of children told to a parent or adult about them experience. This numbers are frightening and increasing. It seems that the world is no longer safe and sure.

How can a parent be aware of his child internet surfing habits?

This is a difficult mission for a parent. Being a parent means responsibility, taking care of your child and in the most cases working a lot. Unfortunately, jobs take more time and you can't be all the time with an eye on your child.

It's very important to talk with your child about the online dangers and to advice him not to leave the public area of a chat room.
Online shopping should be made only in your presence and not before you assure that are a trusted company and a secure website.
Keep the computer in a common area of the house, or if you decide to put it in his bedroom, install a monitoring software to be aware of every step he makes on the web.

Try to find out if your child receives gifts, e-mails, photos or even phone calls from people you don't know.
Take action, protect your child!

My view is that if you feel you have to spy on a cheating spouse then you probably already know what you are going to find out...you just need proof! Is it ethical? Is your partner being honest with you? Hmmm...

Great idea not to have your pc in their bedroom. Best to place it downstairs where all can see. I worry that my nieces are unsafe, glad to know my sister only lets them on the computer when she's there.

Violent Internet games affect children's life

I recently found a study about how Internet games affect children's life.
"According to DeGaetano and Bander [1996] violent video/Internet games send the following false messages to the players:

- Problems can be resolved quickly and with little personal investment.
- The best way to solve a problem is to eliminate the source of the problem.
- Problems are right or wrong, black or white.
- It is acceptable to immerse oneself in the video game's rule driven reality without questioning the rules.
- Use instinctual rather than thoughtful, responsible behaviors to react to problems.
- Personal imagination is not an important problem solving skill."

Reading further I found out that there are many ways children interact with the game. Some of them identify with the characters, boys getting more satisfied responding with aggression, while girls get frighten after playing violent games. Others confuse the reality with the game's world because they lack the real life experiences to judge whether something they see on screen is realistic. Personal fantasizing about the characters in a violent game increases the influence of the violent scenes upon children. What shocked me, was finding out that "the two shooters responsible for the Columbine tragedy in 1999 are a good example of the susceptibility of young people to violent portrayals in the electronic media. It is speculated that the two boys were imitating the characters they played on there home computers."
I guess I make up my point of view here. Your child's life it's in your hand, advice him wisely!

FOXSexpert: Protecting Children From Internet Predators

This is what FoxNews published today, 12th June

"Is your child vulnerable? With over 21 million children under 18 years old online (Pew Internet study, 2005), virtual reality has become a haven for the estimated 50,000 sexual predators crawling the Internet at any given time (NetSafe)."
http://www.foxnews.com
"While 71 percent of parents think their children's Internet surfing is for academic purposes, according to NetAlert, only 23 percent of teens confirm such. They're busy doing other things online."

These days teenagers

These days' teenagers want all the liberty in the world, but even if they have it they don't know to use it. They follow the pattern, get the behavior of their parents and analyze how others interact in the society. Bur let me ask you whose fault is that our teens are extremely violent, and involve themselves in inappropriate context and situations?

What is a teen thinking when is using cell phones, Web cams and the Internet to share naked images of them? Isn't this a response to the society and to parent's acting? Growing up surrounded of hostile and aggressive environment, exposed to cruelty and being informed about all the crimes in this world.
