Searching for Safer Pacifiers

Pacifiers are an integral part of babyhood for so many children. And with the huge list of products containing toxic plastic, how do you know which pacifiers are better alternatives for soothing?

There are plenty of great options out there - you just need to know what to look for . . .

We've contacted the manufactures of the following pacifiers to confirm that they are BPA, PVC and Phthalate free.

Safer Pacifier Guide

PLEASE NOTE when reviewing the following list of pacifiers:

Evenflo's line of Vizion, Illuzion and Fuzion pacifiers were made without BPA as of Summer 2008. Choose only those pacifiers specifically labeled as "BPA Free" to ensure they are the new version.

Gumdrop pacifiers contain a polycarbonate (BPA) center, but are completely encased in silicone. Use your own discretion when purchasing, and never trim this pacifier to fit your baby's face better.

Gerber pacifiers are a tricky situation. For some of their pacifiers may contain BPA at times (I guess their recipe changes from time to time).

The following pacifier brands will be completely BPA free by the end of 2008:

Gerber, Nuby, Playtex and Sassy/MAM

Pacifiers to Avoid

The following list of pacifiers currently contains BPA and/or Phthalates

What about pacifiers containing toxic chemicals? Here's a general list of pacifiers to avoid:

Avent
Gerber: Natural Flex, NUK Button, Round Soft Center, NUK Fashion (most NUK Fashion latex pacifiers were listed as BPA free, but to be safe we recommend avoiding all of this style)
Munchkin
Sassy/MAM
Nuby/Luv 'n Care

BPA Free Pacifiers and Teethers Cheat Sheet | Safe Mama
I've gotten a couple of emails from parents asking about safe pacifiers and teethers. With all the news surrounding Bisphenol-a in bottles and sippy cups, parents are now wondering what else they might need to modify in their babies routine to avoid those plastics. Z Recommends did an article on pacifiers last August (have I mentioned lately how much I adore the folks at Z Recommends? Please visit their site%u2026 they rule.), so I figured a new cheat sheet was in order. Once a parent learns about potential hazards its tough to know what to buy and what to avoid. I've said myself more than once "Can't someone just tell me what to buy?".. and I am pretty sure I am not the only busy parent who's uttered that phrase.

We've been in the hunt for an all natural pacifier for quite some time now. Well, the hunt is over! The Natursutten Pacifier recently became available in the US and it's exactly what we've been looking for. We've gotten to know the folks behind the Danish company and really like what we've seen.
