SITE RESPOSIBILITIES OF A SAFETY OFFICER
.Good academic and technical education.
-knowledge of mathematics, engineering priciples, natural and behavioural sciences
.Professional training and experience.
- Familiar with and able to reasonably analyse the pricipal activities or process of the company or industry in which employed.
-Adequate training in basic safety management and accident prevention techniques and in particular the ability to recognise potential accident hazards and systematic and practical ways of eliminating them.
-Knowledge of and conversance with applicable safety laws, regulations, codes and standards

The duties of a safety officer will be to ensure that the safety policy as laid down by management is maintaned and armended as neccessary.
(a) He will assist line management to carry out their responsiblities for all aspects of health and safety.
(b) shall keep up to dates with development in health and safety.
(c) will ensure that adequate training is given to new and existing employees and will assist with this training.
(d) shall maintain the accident reporting system and when neccesary will assist with the investigation and reporting accidents.
(e) shall carry out frequent inspection and report all hazards and breaches of statutory requirements to management.
(f) will arrange all safety meetings.
(g) it is the duty of the safety officer to ensure that the company's policy is implemented, adhere, understood and communicated to all employee.

Induction Of All Person's On Work Site

The site safety officer has to educate and advise every person on site on the safety requirement that must be observe by all including visitors, especially those that will spend brief time at location. they should be shown important areas such as their muster points, the first aid room, exists, dining room, toilets, no-smoking areas and restricted areas. They should be aware of the appropriate personal protective equipment (if any) that must be worn on site/camp. The safety officer should check on the ability to swim if the location is water borne..

The meeting should be schedule for such periods those workers will be attentive and not hurrying such as lunch break or closing time. it should start and closed on schedule. starting or closing late will kill workers interest.

Brief 20 workers before work commence
Talk to them on the use of personal protective equipment and the dangers of using bad tools
Inspect the following:
(i) All equipment for the day's jobs
(ii) All vehicles for the day's job
(iii) The personnel carrier
(iv) The first Aid Box.
(v) The fire Extinguisher
- Checked and confirmed that all warning signs required for the job are on site and in position.
- Instruct workers on the use of fire extinguishers
VISITORS BOOK.
This is a note kept for documentation of all visitors coming in and out from the site. This is another measures taken to ensure security of lives, properties and operations on site.
MEDICAL RECORD BOOK.
on site first Aid medical services to a certain extent should be available. in some companies the site safety officer takes charge of first aid treatment and thus ensures that the first Aid medical record book is properly kept.
MUSTER POINT.
All persons on the site including visitors, who are to spend the nights on the site must be assign to a muster point. An emergency can strike at any time. during emergency drill, gathering of employee at their designated muster point should be checked so that the necessary corrections could be noted and effected. the number of muster points in a work site is influenced by the number of workers and the size of the work site.
