Safety on Guy Fawkes' night
Ranked #17,468 in Holidays & Celebrations, #312,536 overall
Safety is important on Guy Fawkes' night
Guy Fawkes night, also called Bonfire night is celebrated every year on the 5th of November. We celebrate having successfully thwarted Guy Fawkes's (and a group of others) attempts to blow up our house of Lords (more on this later on)
There's just so much to think about when planning this perfect night. From what to do, what to wear, where to go to preparing for the event yet there is seldom a thought for safety of ourselves and others - including the dog or cat!!!

The history behind Bonfire Night
What we now see as a celebration of color and flames actually has its roots deep in the history of the UK - and the facts are often forgotten amid the celebrations.
Way back on 5th November 1605, Guy Fawkes was a part of a gang of Catholics called the Gun Powder Plot. Their aim was to blow up the House of Lords with King James I inside because they wanted a catholic king. Guy Fawkes was caught gaurding the gunpowder and arrested. The people of England were permitted to celebrate the fact that the king had survived an attempt on his life by having bonfires - as long as they weren't dangerous or disorderly, so it's safe to say that getting drunk was pretty much off the cards and you had to choose the site of your fire carefully.
The strange thing is that we didn't actually start to burn the Guy until the 18th century and the reasons why we decided to suddenly start doing this are unclear.
November 5th 1790 added it's own twist and a different direction to things though, with a major national newspaper reporting that children were "begging for money for Guy Faux" - now it wouldn't take long for the adults to spot this and thus jump on the bandwaggon, so to speak. And the same newspaper ran a report on the 4th November 1802 about a group of "Idle layabouts" together with some horrid figure dressed up as a Guy Faux went out begging for money. The men were convicted of begging and receiving money and sent to prison as idle and disorderly persons
The best way to celebrate
The safest way to celebrate Guy Fawkes night is to go to an organised event run by a pub or similar establishment because they'll keep you well away from the fire and fireworks and they'll also have someone on hand just in case things do go wrong and you are in need of first aid. There's also a chance that you may be given a sparkler so be sure that everyone takes a pair of gloves along with them to avoid burnt hands. Once the sparkler goes out, be sure that your child/ren immediately drop it to the ground or into a bucket of sand or water - even though it is out, it's still going to be hot.
Making a Guy

The Guy is real easy to make - all you need is an old shirt, an old pair of trousers, an old pillow case and plenty of old newspaper. Sew the sleeves and legs up - if you have young children, you might like to sew the shirt to the trousers as well, just to make it easier to put Guy together later.
Now that you have sewn Guy's body together, get your child/ren to stuff him with the newspaper. Be careful as they get close to Guy's shoulders though because you still need room to stuff his head and put it onto his sholders.
Now that Guy is stuffed, his head (aka the pillowcase) needs a face on it so give everyone some pens and draw Guy's face. When everyone is happy with Guy's face, stuff the pillowcase 3/4 of the way full and fold it closed if you can to prevent his stuffing from falling out. Now stuff the pillowcase into the neck of the shirt so that Guy's head sits the right way up on his sholders and he is finished.
If you plan on taking Guy out to ask for pennies, you'll need something to transport him on or in because he gets heavy after a while of carrying him - a sack barrow or wheelchair/wheelbarrow are fine. If you use a sack barrow, you'll want some bungee cords to secure him to tha barrow - and, whatever you do, be sure you don't leave him alone... you don't want anyone reporting him as a body to the cops!!!
Just before the fire is lit, it is common to place the Guy on top of the fire, then light it (both the fire and the Guy) and leave to burn. Some people have been known to throw the Guy on afterwards, but this is dangerous because it could create a backdraft - that's why I advise that the Guy is placed on the fire before lighting.
Stay safe!!!
Be seen and don't go out alone - safety in numbers
Be seen at night
If you walk the dog after dark and the dog is dark colored, do all you can to make him visible too. It doesn't have to be as drastic as the coat I've listed but he has to be seen at night
Food
Food is a great idea at your bonfire party - so bring out that barbeque for one last time this year. The standard foods you want to be looking at serving will be hot (because of the time of year obviously) and can involve the usual culprits that you'd cook on the barbeque throughout the summer, plus Mushy peas and mint sauce served in a cup.
Be sure you have access to hot drinks as well.
Serve it up!!!
These are best for avoiding breakages
Pets!!!
Pets generally don't like fireworks so please don't leave them out on Bonfire night or July 4th - and if you know your pet is nervous, have someone stay inside with her or try to drown out the noise with the tv or stereo. If you have a dog, try to walk them before any fireworks are set off to avoid causing any alarm or distress.
For both cats and dogs, providing them with somewhere to hide if they get scared is a great idea - and it's actually illegal not to do this here in the UK. If your pet does decide to go and hide, don't try to coax them out, just give them this time alone and let them come out of their own free will.
Just think...
- 1Hold off on building the bonfire If you fall down the trap that many of our community fire organizers do over here, you'll have been building your bonfire for days by now and at some point overnight, a hedgehog or similar animal would have chanced by it and thought "That'll make me a nice bed for winter". Too many hedgehogs and similar wildlife are killed because we pile the wood up then light it without checking to see if anything has moved in or not
- 2Consider subsituting your bonfre for a Chiminea or pot bellied stove You can have just as much fun with these as you can with a bonfire and you'll be a lot safer considering that your fire is entirely enclosed and therefore easier to put out should anything go wrong.
- 3Have a bucket of water and a bucket of sand availableThe sand is to stand your fireworks in when you let them off and the water is to deposit used fireworks and sparklers in so that no one gets burnt
Countdown to Countdown!

- I once went to England (my favourite holiday destination on Earth) for Guy Fawkes. I packed my warmer jacket, my boots, a hat, took my son and a friend as well as her son and we went by sea to Ramsgate and then, Broadstairs for a one-week stay in England. We arrived on 3rd November and left on 8th.
When we arrived in England, the weather was sunny and... hot, lol. All people in the streets used to wear suits on which they pun a red carnation (not sure it was a carnation but still it was a red flower).
It was a delightful view! And we enjoyed all the festivities during those 5 days, festivities which included compulsive shopping in Canterbury, of course.
I'd like to get once again in England at Guy Fawkes, and would also want to celebrate my first Christmas and Boxing Day in this wonderful country.
Be this lens and this celebration be blessed by the Summer Fun angel on Squidoo (me) ;)
Cheers.
