Halloween Fire Safety
Don't let excitement of the night cause a fire
Of course, Halloween is fun, but fires are more likely because of the decorations, the extra wiring, candles and excitement. Some people do not think of fire safety on Halloween and some obsess over them which can ruin the fun.
Fire safety should be practiced by everyone every day, but for Halloween there are a few extra considerations. If you keep fire safety in mind while decorating and preparing, you can enjoy a worry free night of fun!
Most people seem to think "that would never happen to me", but having worked for Emergency services for nearly ten years, I can tell it does happen to some people. Luckily, There are simple and cheap and some free things that you can do to reduce the risk of Fire where ever you are!
This year, Halloween may see more fires than usual because of the rather extreme weather. In Texas for example, the drought is severe, everything that was once green is not just kindling- waiting for a spark. During the week that I wrote this article- there have been over 200 wildfires in Texas and not a drop of rain in sight. Watering restrictions are necessary in many parts of the US which protects the water supply for drinking water and extinguishing fires, but does not help to prevent them unless you understand your alternatives which most residents don't!
***Please note that these are steps that you can take to reduce fire risks. Things can still go wrong and you may experience a fire anyway. These are certainly not the only steps that you can take to reduce the risk of fire, but they are some simple and effective methods.
Do you keep fire safety in mind when decorating?
Go Flameless!
Flameless Candles have reduced the number of fires caused by pumpkins each year!
Pumpkin fires can easily be prevented by using a flameless candle which offers other benefits as well! A flameless candle won't leave soot inside your pumpkin and can be reused either for next year's Jack o' Lantern or inside (after wiping of course).Personally, I use Glade Flameless candles in almost all of my pumpkins (there are usually lots). I use tea light flameless candles in all of the others!
I take the flameless candle OUT of the decorative jar and I place a lid from either a storage container or a jar underneath it so it does not get all goopy ! These are great for everyday use as well and the Glade ones smell so yummy!
Aside from Pumpkins, many people use real candles to decorate their homes for Halloween. Anytime a candle is potentially going to be left unattended, or possibly knocked over like being used during a crowded party, around pets or children it should not be used, try the flameless candles for your home as well!
Let's not forget about costumes and candles....it is important that costumes fit well not just to prevent trips and falls, but to help reduce the risk of fire. If you are wearing something HUGE, please avoid going near any grills or bonfires and use caution walking by Jack o' Lanterns or reaching over a table with a candle on it, smoking etc!
Need an example? : Large dinosaur costume with a four foot tail standing 3 feet from a bonfire- NOT good! Another??? This one happened to me! I was wearing a velvet cloak while trick or treating and walked very close by a pumpkin that was lit by a candle- a little too close. Luckily the homeowner noticed and quickly dumped his drink on it. Please stay alert if you are wearing a costume that has dangly things, flowing fabric, tails or obscured vision or anything else!
FYI:Real candles should also be kept away from drapery and nothing should be within eighteen inches of it!
Aim for a Flameless Halloween
Glade Flameless Wisp Candle is great for Larger Pumpkins
SC Johnson Inc 22969 Glade Wisp Flameless Candle - Clean Linen
Amazon Price: $7.99 (as of 06/04/2012)![]()
List Price: $17.99
This is my personal Favorite Flameless Candle. There are plenty of Halloween themed flameless candles but inside the pumpkin, no one will see the theme and this one can be used ANY day of the year! You simply tap the plastic scent holding light which is seated in an attractive frosted glass holder and it turns on! It turns itself off after four hours. It runs on 2 AA batteries which last a pretty long time!
I love this flameless candle so much, that I now have a collection and I keep them in areas of the home where a real candle would be attractive but unsafe- for example in a small shelf where the shelf above would be too near a flame, on a stand on the landing of the stairway (where my dogs constantly knock everything over) and in my son's room near his bed for power outages! I also keep one on a tray on my ottoman for a little extra romantic feeling during movie time! I can think of plenty of other places to use these as well!.

Tea Light Flameless Candles for Smaller Pumpkins
Useful year round in many decorations!
24 LED Tea Lights That Flicker and Glow Like Real Candle Light Includes 24 Replacement Lithium Batteries
Amazon Price: $19.95 (as of 06/04/2012)![]()
These are great flameless candles that are smaller and can be used year round! I have decorative tea light holders hanging on my walls which these are absolutely wonderful in! I love that after Halloween is over, these can help create a wonderful romantic candle light atmosphere any time with very little effort or time and no worry about fire!
And of course these are also great for Thanksgiving and Christmas and even Valentine's Day!
These tea light sized flameless candles are great for use in smaller pumpkins, turnips, watermelons or whatever else you may have carved! I did fit one into a gigantic apple I had carved once as well!
This particular set is very good because it also comes with SPARE batteries! Most flameless candles in this size do not include spares, and this size battery is expensive when you must buy them individually!

DO NOT BLOCK FIRE HYDRANTS
I am serious- it makes me very mad, do I need to come find you?
One of the other factors that is often forgotten when people think of fires on Halloween is the potential delay in response- with trick-or -treaters everywhere you look on the route from the station to your home, the fire engines and Paramedics might have to drive a little slower than usual and may have to stop more frequently for children who have strayed from the sidewalk. So if you see a fire, it is important that you call immediately to give responders as much time to get there as possible. If you have extra adults with you, send some either direction to clear the road- make sure that they stay out of the street as well.
Dry Leaves and shrubbery
Dry dead leaves should be raked up and disposed of- not just on Halloween either! You can compost them if you know how, but if you are currently preparing for your party, you may not have time to read up on that right now... please read up on it and consider giving it a try after your party! For now, the leaves should not be there, so just dispose of them!
If you have dead shrubs, try perking them up a bit with water- if you are in a drought with restrictions, see the next box down for options that have kept my plants alive without violating the restrictions! If the bush/shrub/plant etc is dead, get rid of it! You could plant a nice pretty new one after Halloween anyway! If you can't afford any of the watering bags, you can set a bucket or bowl in the shower while you are showering and let it collect the water that was going to go down the drain and dump that in your plants/bushes/trees etc.
During trick or treating you have no idea if people will be walking and smoking, flicking cigarette butts. You or your neighbor might barbecue....
Slow Release Tree Watering Bag
Perk up dry trees without violating watering restrictions!
Treegator Junior Pro 15-Gallon Slow Release Watering Bag for Trees and Shrubs
Amazon Price: $16.95 (as of 06/04/2012)![]()
Please check your local regulations if you are in a drought with watering restrictions! In my area, these watering bags are ok to use because they require little filling and gradually release the water, reducing water waste. Our restrictions here have been pretty tight, although they have fluctuated a bit but I place a bucket or bowl in the shower to capture water that would have gone down the drain and use a funnel to add it to the watering bag so not only are we keeping the tree alive, we are actually wasting less water!
These are great to use to keep your tree alive and less risky for fires- the shrubbery and brush are more dangerous but I have found that with a little creative placing, I have been able to use a watering bag for nearly all of my plants- even the ornamental grasses! I simply place the bag next to a plant as close as possible to the roots OR in between a cluster of plants!
Wires can cause fires as well! Before setting up your heavily lit Halloween display, check all of the wires to ensure that none of them have any splits or tears in the rubber insulation. If they do then don't risk it- get a new one!
Some animated Halloween Decorations may require spcific adaptors- be sure to use the original adaptor and not a "substitute" that you found in a box in the garage! If you can't find the right adaptor, look at the decoration near the part where you plug it in and write down all the numbers and words you see there, then measure the 'hole' or take a picture holding a quarter or penny next to the hole. Take your information down to the friendly folks at Radio Shack and have them help you find the right adaptor! They have done this for me on numerous occasions.
Avoid running wires or lights through areas of dry grass and leaves and keep them out of the way to prevent tripping or having them partially pulled from the outlet (which can cause a spark).
Be sure that any extention cords you use outdoors are UL Listed and that they meet all OSHA standards for outdoor use.
Anonymous Poll for Smokers
What do you do with YOUR cigarette butts?
Are you a "willy nilly" cigarette butt flicker or dropper? Not only is that a fire hazard in dry conditions, it is horrific for the environment. Aside from being unsightly, it allows toxins to seep into the groundwater (sure it is only a little bit from each one, but how many are there laying on the ground across the globe?). Even more frustrating is that small animals and sometimes even children will get ahold of these and either ingest the nastiness or choke on them.
Hopefully you are trying to dispose of them correctly! but let's just see!
This is anonymous so please be honest
Aside from health risks ... smoking is also a fire Hazard
People will do it anyway, here are some ways to reduce the fire risks it carries at a party
I am not endorsing smoking, nor am I going to touch on the health risks in this article because that is a HUGE topic. We are here to discuss fire safety. While we all know it is better not to smoke, it is important to keep in mind that some people still do. I am not asking you to "make smoking more accessible" I am suggesting that if you are hosting a party and smokers are attending, you should be proactive and protect your property and the property of your neighbors from the potential fire risks if you opt not to ban smoking altogether from your property.
If you are having a Halloween Party and are surrounded by dry grass or leaves -as I am in Texas right now- it is best that no one smokes, but someone might try. You can post no smoking signs- especially in severely dry areas even pointing out right in the sign that there is a fire risk.
It is best to plan for someone to try and sneak one and plan a designated area for it before hand, plus set out a metal pail filled 1/2 way with water or if you are in a less risky area, sand and make a little sign for your guests to please ash and dispose of cigarettes and cigars in the pail to prevent fires. You can ask that no one smokes on your property, but keep something on hand just in case so that they do not flick the butt into the grass!
If they are drinking, a water pail will be easier than a sand filled bucket in which they must push the cigarette below the sand. Yes the bucket will be nasty and disgusting to clean- perhaps you should get one you can just throw out but if you are in a high risk area, it is well worth the inconvenience.
If you demand that your guests step off of your property entirely to smoke, then it depends upon where you live and what surrounds your home on whether that would be safe for your home or not- where I am, I would rather have them use the bucket as fire does not respect property lines and there is dry brush everywhere plus starting a fire at the end of the driveway may prevent escape! If you live in an area that is not brushy or that is mostly pavement, ask them to take a used beverage can or bottle with them (littering is not good anyway!).
You should also try to keep the smoking area on concrete and away from piles of dry leaves or dry grass if at all possible. Before the guests arrive, spray down the area surrounding your smoking area with water to further reduce the risk. I like to keep my hose out by the smoking area and give it a spray every now and then throughout the party as well.
If you are a smoker, please do not think I am picking on you! I have been trying very hard to quit for many years and hate to say, but I too sneak out still. I want everyone to keep fire safety in mind!
And please please please.... never flick your cigarettes into dry grass or bushes! Put it out and dispose of it properly.
