- Sloop

By far the most popular for the rig for most modern cruising sailboats is the sloop rig. It's simple, efficient and provides speed with minimal tweaking. Its represented by one mast, a mainsail and one headsail.

There are a couple of variations one being the Bermudan Sloop design which can be a mast head or fractional rig. The masthead design has a stay from the masthead and carries a full headsail. The fractional design has a smaller headsail with a stay positioned some distance down the mast.

- Cutter

Cutter rigs are much like the sloop but have two headsails. They are popular among long distance sailors for their ease of handling because both are smaller in size than the sloop headsails. Both headsails are fitted on their own stay and are flexible in size of each.

- Ketch

The Ketch rig is a two masted design with a mizzen mast stepped aft of the main mast but ahead of the rudder post. Ketches and Yawls are not as popular on newer boats but there are still many around and many people even swear by them as blue water boats.

- Yawl

Many people confuse the Yawl and Ketch designs. The way to tell the difference is the Yawl has its mizzen mast aft of the rudder post where the Ketch's mizzen is ahead of the rudder post.

- Schooner

Most of the sailing ships of old are of schooner design. The romantic movies of great battles of British and Spanish navies and pirate battles featured Schooners. The are still around today mostly for nostalgic and historic reasons.

- Cat Rig

The Cat rig has a mast stepped forward and traditionally has only one sail. But some larger ketch and schooner rigs also have a variation of the cat rig.

These designs aren't the only ones out there, they account for the majority of the boats sailing today.

Here is step by step how to build sailboat.

Step one:
First, building plans are needed for the type and style that is needed to be build. A lot of them are available from the free and basic sets to a range of commercial variety that is sometimes quite expensive. In spite of which design is chosen, they all will serve very well otherwise they would not be available to the general public. A number of books are also available that will help in building a sailboat.

Step two:
Next step is lofting. It means that the plywood that is still being used will need the markings set for cutting. These are clearly marked on the plans. Once the markings have been completed, the plywood has to be cut. A circular saw or jigsaw is mostly used for this purpose.

Step Three:
Now when all forms have been cut, the front and back halves will have to be assembled. It is extremely important to assemble these along with other pieces that form the basic structure of the boat. Time would have to be spent for making the form as accurate as possible so that the final product will not suffer later.

Step Four:
The fourth step is to attack the joint edges together using epoxy. Once the epoxy have been brushed the epoxy on and edges are sealed tightly using clamps until the epoxy dries.

It must be made sure that the epoxy has been applied on any fiberglass tape used at the joints. When it is dried, the hulls seams can now be sealed. Duct tape can be used for plastering the outside seams while epoxy resin should be used on the inside seams. When the inside has been dried, the duct tape can be used to cover its whole surface.

Step Five:
Now when the hull has been dried up and set, the next step to do is to work on other details like deck, seat, tiller, storage area and other. When these items have been completed to a level of satisfaction, a maritime paint has to be used for painting both the inside and outside of the new sailboat.
