Get To Know The Benefits Of Sailing Apparel

When on the water it is import to wear the correct sailing apparel. Having a knowledge of different materials and their benefits will really help you!

Fabrics these days are specifically designed for the environment of the water. Having the right match for the conditions will leave you comfortable rather than not.

This lens runs through principles of these fabrics and their benefits.

What Not To Wear!

Sailing Apparel To Leave At Home

This may come as a bit of a surprise, but you know that wool jumper that's seen you through endless watches in the dark hours before dawn? It's not doing you many favors!

There I said it! Phew! The reason for this is as follows. Along with natural fibers including cotton. Wool - no pun intended, absorbs moisture whether it's from you or from rain.

This moisture is held by the wool, leaving you cold as body heat is lost to warm the wool so it can dry. The same goes for woolly sailing hats and any wool products. This is a bummer but true.

Another leave behind fiber that you should note is cotton. T shirts are a prime example. Suppose you have a long run down wind, as foredeck you are patiently waiting for some work. Then you have a floury of activity. It's hard work and you build up some heat and sweat.

Then you have another break. That sweat (We know ladies don't sweat of course!) will be held close to your skin. The result is you'll get a chill.

Now For The Good News!

Not Only Can You Look Good On The Water But.........

You can be assured of some cutting edge technology which will keep you dry and warm! As mentioned these fabrics are specifically designed to look after you at sea.

Polyester for example is a main constituent of primary layers. The first layer next to your skin. What's so good about polyester? it has wicking qualities which draws moisture away from your skin!

The result is you don't get a chill when your being weight over the side! Stay dry and comfortable. Many brands also impregnate an anti bacterial agent as well. You'll see the advantage of that!

Next off is Goretex. This is used on your inshore or offshore jackets. Goretex is a multi layered composite. The layering allows breathability so your body temperature is maintained.

The clever bit is that rain is kept out. Science has proven that sweat molecules are smaller than rain water!

Sailing Boots And Why You Need Them

Do You Want Wet Feet?

Personally wet and cold feet are my pet hate! Fortunately sailing boots have been designed to combat the harsh environment of the sea. From the sole to the rim. Whether half length or three quarters. Quality shines through.

Breathable fabrics are sown in to the fabric, allowing your feet to breath. The outer layer is often Gortex - same stuff just tougher. This means your foot, ankle and calf has full range of movement.

Pre conditioned leather is also used to similar advantage. The sole is constructed to be able to grip the deck, even laterally. Often you get a draw string at the top to keep the weather out too!

The difference of having your ankles protected and your feet warm is huge. Three quarter length boots also offer protection to shins too! Less bruising more fun - terrific. Read more here!
