olde tyme sailor didn't just stroll into Macy's, Ross's, or WallyWorld and buy something off the rack. Because, basically anywhere you might visit, there weren't any racks... it was all custom. From what I read of the time, most sailors made their own slops out of wore out sails, blankets, tarps and whatever else they scrounged that could be recycled, in more modern terms, upcycled into something they needed.
