Have you sailed on a tall ship? Plan to? Please share your story...

Thanks for noticing my lens about my local tall ship. I only had a few hours, in a gale, so she could only use two small sails. It was great.
Everybody should try the experience if they can.

Years ago, there was a cruise company called Windjammer Barefoot Cruises. You could go on the cruise & just relax, or become part of the crew. I always wanted to do it, and now the company is non-existent. I see that there are still options available. I enjoyed the article. Thanks!

Never sailed on a tall ship, but watched them come into Boston Harbor one year. Nice lens. I especially enjoyed reading about the history of the various ships.

These tall ships are beautiful. I remember touring the Christian Radich years ago when it was in port in Montreal.

I did a day sail on Tenacious (out of Southampton) a couple of years back. Awesome, and I hope that some day I'll be able to afford a longer trip.

As someone who has sailed several times on the Malcolm Miller, sister-ship to the Sir Winston Churchill, I can only suggest that if you ever get the opportunity to sail on any tall ship seize it with both hands.
  • COUNTRYLUTHIER Sep 12, 2011 @ 1:36 pm | delete
Still amazing that hundreds of years later, you can sail around the world with only nature powering you and stars and the sun to guide you. Outstanding nautical lens seafarer squid!

Although I never had the opportunity to see a Tall Sip up close, I did see the celebration of Tall Ships entering the New York harbor in 1976 when I was a student at Parsons School of Design.

What was amazing to me where the mast and the navigational expertise the sailors of hundreds of years past possessed. Absolutely amazing.

I love to sail and I love to travel. Today I'm traveling on a Squid Angel Road Trip for Memorial Day weekend that brought me to this lens. Leaving you with a Squid Blessing for your well done lens! I also created a featured lens module for my Memorial Day journey at My Squid Angel Wings and have added this lens.

I toured one of these ships in St Augustine, Florida. The crew was an eclectic group and very interesting. They definately were living the adventure of a lifetime.

I've never sailed on a tall ship but I've always enjoyed the opportunity to watch one as it sailed by. I'd be happy even having the opportunity to ride on a regular sail boat if the opportunity ever came along.

You have quite a list here; I can't help but wonder if these are the ones you came across when searching for a place in which you could learn to sail such tall ships.

I think it's outstanding that a couple of ships are used to enable sailing lovers with physical limitations to experience the joy of living their dreams.

Some years ago we went out in our boat and watched "Tall Ship Race"! These majestic ships were competing and were sailing towards Swedish harbour. I saw some of them you have posted here!
  • Bruno Girin Dec 5, 2010 @ 8:34 am | delete
If it was in 2007, I was sailing on Sørlandet that year. The harbour of Stockholm full of ships was a fantastic sight! I just realised that from that trip I have virtually no pictures of Stockholm, probably because I was too busy having a good time :-)

It took Bravery and Huevos Grande to sail the Tall Ships.

Unfortunately, I get seasick easily. But great lens, anyway.

Great Lens! These ships are classic beauty. I've been in love with the Christian Radich since I saw the movie "Windjammer" in 1958. You might like my Windjammer - The Movie lens. I've favorited and lensrolled yours :-)

I read the whole Master & Commander series about sailing during the Napoleonic era and have always wanted to get on one of these ships.

I'd love to do this someday! I've featured this lens on my slow journeys lens--it's such a amazing way to travel.

I was a trainee and a watch leader on asgard 11 and it was one of the best experiences of my life. I plan to do another tall ship voyage, any recemendations?.
  • Bruno Girin May 14, 2010 @ 6:48 pm | delete
Nice lens! Thanks for using some of my pictures, it's very much appreciated. I have sailed on several tall ships and in particular Sørlandet. It is an amazing experience and I heartily recommend it to anybody who wants a holiday out of the ordinary. But even better, what about racing on a tall ship? Sail Training International organise tall ship races every year and they are absolutely amazing events. You can check the routes of the 2010 races here: http://www.sailtraininginternational.org/site-archive/page-archive-426.html

Don't worry about age for sailing on a tall ship, restrictions vary from ship to ship but generally speaking if you are anywhere between 16 and 70, you should be able to sail. But beware that it's not a cruise in the traditional sense of the word, you'll have to fully take part in running the ship, which is a lot of fun! So just contact some of the ships, see what's available and go sailing, you won't regret it.

Bruno, you have taken some beautiful tall ship photos! Thanks for sharing them via Creative Commons and for posting the tall ship race info. Cheers!

It seems like it would be interesting sailing on one of those. I enjoyed being a passenger on a regular sail boat and this would also be a fun adventure. 5*

No i haven't, but being part of a crew on a tall ship is something i would have loved to have done when i was younger. 5* for this lens and rolled to "Dinghy Building Tips For Dummies"

No, I have never sailed on one of these beautiful ships and have no immediate plans to do so. However peoples lives change. My interest is only as a writer gaining information...I was actually looking for information on the different uses of the anchor...I believe that they are of much more use than what I have read about thus far...I plan to use the information in a Christian Sermon...

Hey, Im looking to possibly crew a tall ship for the summer of 2010 (roughly from late may till august). Need a summer job before college, plus this would be the chance of a lifetime. Ive grown up around boats and my family has always had one growing up. I love being on the water.. any one know of a ship that hires for the summer or any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

ORH-Sr, thanks for the good words, I'm glad you liked the lenses. They were some of my favorites to build. You can find more tall ship lenses and fans at the Tall Ships Group.

Yes, I toured the HMS Bounty while she was in St. Pete. Many years ago. Looking forward to reading your Stad Amsterdam lens!

    Mac33,

It's me again. You mentioned touring the HMS Bounty as a kid. Was that at the pier in St. Petersburg Fl. by any chance. I toured it there years ago.

    Again great lenses.

Wonderful lens. I have been working on a lens about the Clipper Stad Amsterdam. I was able to do a day trip on this clipper about two years ago. I had heard and read about these great ships and the changing of the sails and all the other things involved in the operation of the ship. Nothing, absolutely nothing compares to being there watching the crew do all the things you had read about. I have told people about the trip repeatedly and when I started on Squidoo earlier this month I decided to share it with everyone.

I was just looking around the travel area and discover two of your lens on tall ships. They are great; I will favorite them and hope to rollens them once I have my lens published.
