Saina in News
New Delhi: Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award from Sports Minister MS Gill after missing out on the August 29 ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhawan due to the World Championships in Paris. "Dr MS Gill, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, gave away Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award for the year 2010 to Ms Saina Nehwal at a simple ceremony here today," the Sports Ministry said in a statement.
Telecom giant Airtel is the latest in a series of corporates that have signed on the World No. 3 as a brand ambassador and Saina's endorsement value is understood to have reached the Rs. 1 crore per deal mark. She is really in demand. A lot of companies want to associate with her. Saina already endorses the Deccan Chronicle newspaper,
Saina Nehwal was born in patriarchal Haryana, her own grandmother refused to look at her. "I was really surprised when I was told that my grandmother did not come to see me till a month after my birth. I was born seven years after my only sister Chandranshu and my birth was a big disappointment for her," the ace shuttler, fresh from a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, wrote in a column for the 'India Today' magazine.
The 20-year-old Saina had made a meteoric rise following her back-to-back title triumphs at the India Open Grand Prix, Singapore Open Super Series and Indonesian Open Super Series to reach the world number two spot. But a quarterfinal finish at the recently-concluded World badminton Championship in Paris left her one place down the rung at the third position.
