The 20 year old Indian Ace Shuttler Saina Nehwal is the first Indian woman to win a super series tournament (The Super Series tournament is roughly equivalent to a Grand Slam in tennis) when she occupy the 2009 Indonesian Super Series and Currently ranked number 3 in the world by BWF. Saina is the only Indian woman to reach the singles quarterfinals at the Olympics and the first Indian to win the World Junior Badminton Championships. Saina Nehwal made history on June 21, 2009, becoming the first Indian to win a Super Series tournament by clinching the Indonesian Open at Jakarta with a dazzling victory over higher-ranked Chinese Lin Wang. On June 20, 2010, Saina won her second career super series title by lifting the Singapore Open Super series. Saina's highest career ranking is No 2

Saina Nehwal was born in 1990 in a Jat family from Haryana/India. In Dec 1998, Saina's father took her to the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium in Hyderabad to meet Badminton Coach Nani Prasad . Identifying her potential, Coach asked her father to enroll Saina as a summer trainee.To meet-out the rising cost of her training, Saina's father pull out his money from savings and provident fund. The hardship continued until 2002, when Yonex, a well-known sports brand, offered to sponsor Saina's kit. In the year 2004, BPCL signed this rising star onto their payroll, and Gold Quest also supported her.

Saina has made history by winning twice, the celebrated Asian Satellite Badminton tournament (India Chapter). She is the first player to do so. In the year 2006, Saina came into sight on the global scene when she became the first Indian woman to win the Philippines Open, a 4-star tournament. While entering the tournament she was the 86th seed, but Saina went on to shock several top seeded players including Huaiwen Xu before defeating Malaysian Julia Xian Pei Wong for the title. The same year, she lost a hard fought match against top seeded Chinese Wang Yihan finished as runner up at the 2006 BWF World Junior Championships, She won a great match in the 2008 by becoming the first Indian to win the World Junior Badminton Championships by defeating ninth seeded Japanese Sayaka Sato 21-9, 21-18. Saina has been selected as "The Most Promising Player" in 2008.

Saina in actionNew Delhi: Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award from Sports Minister MS Gill after missing out on the August 29 ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhawan due to the World Championships in Paris. "Dr MS Gill, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, gave away Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award for the year 2010 to Ms Saina Nehwal at a simple ceremony here today," the Sports Ministry said in a statement.

Saina Nehwal was born in patriarchal Haryana, her own grandmother refused to look at her. "I was really surprised when I was told that my grandmother did not come to see me till a month after my birth. I was born seven years after my only sister Chandranshu and my birth was a big disappointment for her," the ace shuttler, fresh from a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, wrote in a column for the 'India Today' magazine.

The 20-year-old Saina had made a meteoric rise following her back-to-back title triumphs at the India Open Grand Prix, Singapore Open Super Series and Indonesian Open Super Series to reach the world number two spot. But a quarterfinal finish at the recently-concluded World badminton Championship in Paris left her one place down the rung at the third position.

Saina Says

Ever since she fails to take out on a medal at the Beijing Olympics, Saina Nehwal is keen on finishing on the platform at the London Olympics in 2012:

"I am in great shape now. My ankle's healed completely and I am in good form. Winning an Olympic gold is my dream and I know I am on the right track. I will be playing several tournaments to gear up for the Olympics. I am very confident and having beaten almost all the best players in the world I don't fear anyone now."
