Saint Patrick's Day

Saint Patrick's Day is a cultural and religious holiday celebrated internationally on 17 March.

Sixty years ago, I remember St Patricks day well,it was a day we would look up to, as something special, as something was always done in the classroom, that was special, like history of Ireland, once I remember going on a feild trip looking for four leaf clovers, which is what the shamrock is called in New Zealand.

Saint Patrick's Day was made an official feast day in the early 17th century, and has gradually become a secular celebration of Irish culture in general worldwide.

Saint Patrick's Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland,Newfoundland and Labrador and in Montserrat.

It is also widely celebrated by the Irish diaspora, especially in places such as Great Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand, among others.

Today, St. Patrick's Day is probably the most widely celebrated saints day in the world and in New Zealand their are special get together in most regions where they celebrate their Irish heritage.

New Zealand and Australia celebrate Saint Patrick's day

Sydney Opera House St Patrick's 2010

Saint Patrick's Day is widely celebrated in New Zealand and Australia - green items of clothing are traditionally worn and the streets are often filled with revellers drinking and making merry from early afternoon until late at night.

The Irish made a large impact on the social, political and education systems, of both countries.

Owing to the large numbers of Irish people that emigrated to, or where brought over as convicts during the 19th century.

Saint Patrick's Day is seen as a day to celebrate individual links to Ireland and Irish heritage.

New Zealand is the first country in the world to see Ireland's National Day "St Patricks day".

Middle of March is a great time, autumn in the air, a great time of the year to mark that special Irish National Day.

You never know you may find out more about the myth of leprechauns, which I have a soft spot for, by attending a celebration on Saint Patrick's day.
