Rainbows & Water ~ Try some experiments with color mixing! Fill some clear plastic cups halfway with water. Have several food color dyes. Add the primary colors (blue, red, yellow) to three individual cups. Make them a dark shade if possible. Add colors together two at a time in other plastic cups to form secondary colors (orange, green, purple). Then experiment with other combinations of colors and shades of them.

Painting a Rainbow
~ Part 1: Discuss the colors of a rainbow. (Roy G. Biv) Talk about primary and secondary colors and share examples. Give each student a foam plate with a nickel-sized amount of each: yellow, red, and blue. Have students draw a circle on their paper and divide it into sixths. In every other space, paint in the primary colors of red, yellow, and blue. Mix a little red and yellow to make orange and paint it in the section between the two. Mix yellow and blue to make green; paint between their spaces on the circle. Mix blue and red to create purple; paint on the last space.
~ Part 2: Discuss the order of colors on a rainbow. Use what the students learned about color mixing to paint a rainbow on another piece of paper. Let them explore with other color shades on their rainbow.

Potato Art!

Mrs. Potato Head. Pictures, Images and Photos

"Mr. or Mrs. Potato Head"
~ Create a real one! Decorate some friendly looking potatoes with sequins, ribbon, sticks or toothpicks, felt, paint, or whatever your creativity comes up with! How can you create feet, a hat, face, or clothes?

Potato Prints
~Cut good sized potatoes in half. With a 'butter' knife, trace a design shape then cut out around the shape so it stands out. Dip into paint and create picture prints, homemade wrapping paper, shirts, and more.

Patrick the Leprechaun Puppet
~ Use a paper bag or old sock to create a puppet of a little leprechaun friend.

Shamrock Art!

Shamrock Bouquet
~ Cut shamrock shapes out of green construction paper, or white paper to color, attach them to pipe cleaners with tape or staples. Put several together in a bouquet to put in a vase. A vase may be made out of an old toilet paper roll center if you tape a piece of paper over the bottom. Another option would be a vase out of a paper cup. Decorate and place your shamrocks inside.

Fancy Shamrocks
~ Decorate paper or cardboard 'shamrocks' to use for decoration. Some options for decorating: bunch up small squares of various green shaded tissue paper and glue; paint green; paint green and add sparkles; use markers or crayons to draw in designs; spread a thin coat of glue over the shamrock and sprinkle on green glitter.

Lovely Shamrocks
~ Show students how to make a shamrock from three heart shapes and a rectangle stem. Glue onto a piece of paper and decorate.

Green Collage
~ Cut out a huge shamrock shaped piece of construction paper or tagboard for each student. Provide them with "green things" to create a fun collage. Possible add-ons: glitter, sequins, ribbon, yarn, stickers, buttons, fabric, old magazines to cut out green pictures, etcetera.
