Saints Are Great Heroes

Saints can be great role models for children. A saint is not someone who was born perfect or who has never made mistakes in his or her life. Sainthood is something we are all called to and spend our lives on the road to. Those who are honoured by the Church as saints are those whose lives have shown a commitment to following Christ and who have been transformed in the process. A saint has worked through what holds them back from shining the light of God's grace into the world. Through the struggles and prayers of a saint, the light of God flows freely from them, transforming not only themselves but also those around them and ultimately the whole world.

Everyone can become a saint. In fact, becoming a saint is the goal of every Christian life. But even someone whose life seems exemplary is not called a saint while they are still alive. This is because we can fall from the path any place along it, and in fact, the biggest obstacle of all to our being transformed by the love and grace of God is our own pride. That is why in the gospel it is usually the poor sinner who goes before the "religious" person. Humility is key to the spiritual life.

This lens is a compilation of my lenses about saints and prayers and spirituality. As I am currently still working on a few other lenses about saints, I will be adding to the list as they are completed.

What to Name a Child

When parents choose a name for a child, they sometimes think of the saint called by that name. According to Catholic and Orthodox belief, the saint you are named after watches over you in a special way.

Even if you are not a person of faith, it's fun to discover who has shared your name. Names have been chosen because of what they represent as well as because of who else has shared them. People have been named after flowers and trees, after things such as light, or qualities such as courage or hope.

Do these names affect our characters? That's open to speculation, but because parents may aspire to certain qualities in their child by choosing the name, this must have some effect on who the child becomes, don't you think?
