Wood is a Classic - Just Like this Cherry Beauty
Wood is a classic, no doubt about it. We've been using them since our great caveparents hollowed out the first log to make a bowl. They've been a stable ever since to serve up a variety of foods.
Now we use wood bowls primarily for decorative touches around the house as fruit bowls or vessels to display our favorite things. They're also a favorite for serving salads. This Lipper International 13-Inch Cherry Wavy Rim Bowl is a primary example of why people love a wood salad bowl. It's a favorite on Amazon. It's beautiful, wide and affordable!

If you maintain your wood bowls properly, they can last a lifetime. Keep these tips in mind:
1. NEVER soak a wood salad bowl in water. Wood loves water and the leads to expansion... cracking... and sorrow.
2. Wash immediately after using warm water and mild dish soap. Dry completely.
3. Store out of the sunlight (no need to dry out the bowl any more than necessary).
4. Periodically, season with food grade mineral oil when the bowl looks dry. Use a few drops on a soft cloth and rub in well.
5. If it smells rancid, don't use for for food serving.
Versatile Ceramic Salad Bowls
And Pretty, Too!
Ceramic salads bowls make me think of a lunch in Tuscany under a large, old oil tree and a view of acres and acres of grape vineyards. I've never been to Italy, but I love the idea, which is why one of my salad bowls is an Italian design. Ceramic bowls are also very versatile. They can be used for salads, of course, but they can double as a pasta bowl or any of your other serving needs (my does duty on the holidays, too).
This beauty above is a classic design -- more French Provencal than Italian -- but it still works. And it's a great way to bring color to you table (don't you just love that deep mustard color with red, green and white accents). But it comes in lots of other designs and colors, too, from an Oriental fish style to warm browns and blues (definitely of the Italian heritage).

What's Your Tossing Style?
That Will Determine the Size and Shape Salad Bowl You Need
Most people like very wide (at 12-inches), shallow salad bowl. that allows them to easily reach into the bowl with the salad servers and toss well. Other like slightly wide bowls (10-inches) that are very deep (this is my favorite). that way you can contain the salad a little more. There are others, however, who swear by bowls that are slightly turned in. They say it's the only way to keep the salad in the bowl when tossing.
