Reverend Samuel Parris of Salem Village in Massachusetts had a daughter and niece who became ill and were diagnosed with bewitchment as if this were an ailment, opening the way for the Salem Witch Trials. The Salem Witch Museum reveals the events and history of that time.

On this page you will find information about the museum and necessary links to plan a visit, plus background about the Witch Trials including a list of those who died and how.

Though the Salem Witch Trials went on for less than a year in 1692, over 300 years ago, the intrigue with the witch hunt goes on.

What does the Bible say about Witches and Witchcraft

And why I care and added my concern to a page like this

In some accounts of the Salem Witch hunt and trials that I've read or viewed, I'm left with the impression that puritanical Christians killed witches. Verses that I've read in the Bible indicate that witches are not approved by God (see verses below) and there is a stiff punishment for the unrepentant witch. I only see one place where God said that a witch was not to be allowed to live, and this was written as part of the laws to Israelites, long before Christ's birth, death and resurrection.

I care about how Christians are portrayed because I am one, and know that Christians are human and fail, and are just as capable as anyone of taking the Bible and making it say what they want it to say with negative consequences...like those that took place during the Salem Witch Trials. There are other examples of this in our history, slavery and some of the actions during the crusades come to mind. This is why it is important to study the whole scripture. Some verses in the Bible (scriptures) cannot stand alone, but need to be confirmed by reading other scriptures, comparing scripture with scripture, through careful study and prayer for wisdom and understanding.

God is the ultimate Judge...and until the day that we die we have opportunity to repent and turn our lives around in the right direction thanks to what Jesus Christ did on the cross...so perhaps taking lives like they did in the Salem Witch Trials not only killed innocents but robbed someone of that opportunity to repent? I don't know for sure, but it's something to think about.

  • 4

2 Chronicles 33:6 (NIV) "He sacrificed his sons in the fire in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, practiced sorcery, divination and witchcraft, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the eyes of the LORD, provoking him to anger."

Well done. An interesting twist with your own Christian thoughts. What prevailed through out New England in the 17th and 18th century was England's fervent religious grip that especially oppressed both men & women. If you enjoy history there are a number of women's diaries from Massachusetts & New Hampshire that will give you a good insight of the times. Congratulations for your finalist position.
  • rlmodranski Oct 31, 2011 @ 6:29 pm | delete
Very nice job! I too am a Christian that finds it appalling that some take one single verse and bend it to meet their views. I also find it interesting that one of the verses that condemns witchcraft also mentions selfish ambition. Makes me wonder if those with selfish ambition had been on trial at the same time as those condemned of witchcraft if a few less would have been hung.

I agree with your comments on the Christian faith in relation to this period of history. In this time, judgment was taken too far. People claiming to act as Christians by condemning witches were probably acting more on their "religion" rather than standing on their relationship with God.

I have a picture of me in front of the statue. The statue itself is scary but I think that since I was sick when we visited Salem, everything was scary. I also got a parking ticket while visiting the museum. Still the museum was fascinating and wandering the town was a great history lesson.
  • happynutritionist Oct 10, 2011 @ 8:20 am | delete
Glad you got to visit...sounds like it was a bit challenging, but worth it, I hope:-)
