General Salem Sites

General Info about Salem

Salem has enjoyed a long history of being a top tourism destination in New England, but did you know it also has a great downtown shopping and entertainment scene as well as being a dynamic business center? If it's in Salem and it's cool, and it's on the web, you'll find it here!
Salem Chamber of Commerce
Check out the member listings for a great way to find what you are looking for in Salem. Members who have web sites for their business are linked here for one-stop surfing.
Destination Salem
Good source of information about Salem and a good place to start planning your trip.
Salem Ferry
Salem has revived its ferry service to and from Boston's Long Wharf! A 45-50 minute trip one way, this is probably the best way to get to and from Salem to Boston. Try it around sunrise or sunset for spectacular views of the North Shore coast line.
Getting there by train
Salem station is right in the middle of the downtown area and is a great, hasslefree way to travel. It's one of the main stops on the Newbury/Rockport line so the train stops there at least once an hour, even on weekends.

Eat and Drink

Where to eat and drink in Witch City

Salem has a lot of great places to eat and drink, here's some of my favorites.
Bangkok Paradise
Right on Washington St., Bangkok Paradise has a great sushi bar and great music at night. May I recommend the Bangkok Cocaine cocktail? Or if you are trying to stay upright for the rest of the night, try the Thai Iced Tea. Not too spicy and very smooth. Excellent vegetarian dishes and kid-friendly.
Mass Menu's Salem page
A lot of Salem restaurants are too busy making good food right now to come up with a website (don't worry, I'm on it!), but this link will give you a good overview of what's in town.
Finz Restaurant
Great bar and seafood. Outdoor dining right next to the wharf. Try the fried oysters! Good choice of beer, wine and cocktails. Kid friendly too.
Rockafellas
This place gets crazy crowded on weekend nights, but the food is pretty good (kids menu included) and the bartenders are friendly. Barfood that takes it a few steps above chicken wings and french fries.
The Pig's Eye
Great pub, friendly bartenders and regulars and a good Sunday brunch menu. Located on Derby St. near the House of Seven Gables, the Pigs Eye is a great place to stop for a pint after visiting all 101 tchotke shops on Pickering Wharf.
Passage to India
Indian food with a great range of vegetarian and meat dishes. Cozy interior with a small bar at the front and spacious seating in the attached room. Papadums come with the glasses of water and the staff is wonderful.

Shop til you Drop on Essex St.

A guide to buying that perfect souvenir

Salem seems to have hundreds of souvenir shops. A lot of them are located on Essex St., which runs by the Peabody Essex Museum. Here is your official guide to its huge selection of "witch kitsch", goth, magickal supplies, t-shirts and candy. Lens Master's Note: A lot of these stores do not have websites (yet) so I thought it best to show them in a list format.
  • Coon's Cards and Gifts
    228 Essex St.
Don't let the name freak you out. Tiny store with a big selection of magnets, postcards, mugs, jewelry and t-shirts. This is the shop you take your mother to when she comes to visit.
  • Sophie & Stella's Sweet Shop
    230 Essex St.
Saltwater Taffy, Boston Baked Beans, Fudge, Chocolates, Popcorn and Truffles. Get your office a souvenir box of candy here.
  • Derby Square Bookstore
    215 Essex St.
Stacks (and we do mean STACKS) of books at reasonable used prices. CAVEAT, not a good place for one of those large "baby backpacks". Great selection of unusual titles and bestsellers.
  • The Magic Parlor
    217 Essex St.
Your go-to source for figurines of witches riding brooms in lingerie, ceramic baby skulls, skull incense burners, incense and tarot cards.
  • Newmark Gallery
    209 Essex St.
Your grandmother's attic meets that headshop from the eighties. Books, records, original art, skull shaped incense burners, handbags, musical instruments and 1950's cocktail picnic kits. Browse for hours.
  • Witch History Museum Gift Shop
    197-201 Essex St.
Mugs with black cats, man-in-the-moon mirrors, antique postcards and "greenman" wall hangings. Great gifts for the pagans on your Winter Solstice shopping list.
  • The Trolley Depot
    193 Essex St.
Besides the classic Salem gear, (t-shirts, candleholders, shot glasses and coffee mugs with black cats and witches) the store also has a cool selection of Marvel Comics accessories (a Wonder Woman lunchbox just like the one you had in 3rd grade) and collectibles. Lots of fun to browse while you wait for the trolley ride.
  • Wicked Goodz
    6 Central St.
Not sure what to get for that someone who has everything? I bet they don't have the official "Twinkie Cook Book" or the "Guide to Gothic Homemaking"! While you're at it, pick up a sushi-patterned wallet for yourself.
  • The Broom Closet
    3 Central St.
Get your eye of newt and toe of frog here! Incense and incense related accessories, candles and candleholders. Everything to cast the perfect spell.
  • Aroma Sanctum
    5 Central St.
    http://www.aromasanctum.com
The staff here will mix you custom essential oil mixes for romantic, and/or medicinal needs. One of Salem's most pleasant olfactory experiences.
  • Angelica of the Angels
    7 Central St.
    http://www.angelicaoftheangels.com
The best place to take your 13 year old niece who likes rainbows, crystals and beads. A little jewel-box of a store, chock full of glow-in-the-dark Buddhas, window crystals, candles and window art. Psychic readings and aura photos are also done on site.
  • Pampelmousse
    185-189 Essex St.
Groovy foodie gifts. Perfect presents for baby showers, housewarmings and birthdays. Good selection of wine and wine tastings happen every Saturday!
  • Bernard's Jewelry & Antiques
    179 Essex St.
Estate jewelry, clocks and fine china. Buy that wedding present for your favourite bride & groom here.
  • The Bootery
    180 Essex St.
Shoes! Lots of them at discounted prices. Satisfy your footwear fix here.
  • Samantha's
    177 Essex St.
Lots of costume shopping for Halloween, New Year's or whenever the mood strikes. Velvet capes, vinyl go-go dresses and more mundane "gently worn" clothing.
  • The Goddess's Treasure Chest
    173 Essex St.
Little Buddha statues? Check. Little faerie figurines? Check. Love & Healing Magick Gift Baskets? Check. Plus a wide selection of New Age and Magick books and cd's as well as Aura photography.
  • The Museum Place Mall
Located between Essex and Church St.
Cool Jewels: Great ethnic jewelry, toys, crafts & clothes. Day of the Dead items featured.

Witch Tees: All things t-shirt and Salem related. You've got your smiley face/witch's hat tees, your airbrushed wolf's head tees, your black cat tees and 7 kinds of what-have-you.

Lotus Gifts: Great version of the classic Chinatown trinket shop. Salem shirts are here too, as well as, paper lanterns, silk clothing and lots of cool, inexpensive little tchotkes.

Polonus European Deli & Ice Cream: Imported gourmet groceries from Europe.

Turtle Alley II Chocolates: Diet-busting chocolates and dietetic chocolates too!

Salem's Oriental Gallery: High-end wall hangings and silk paintings. Beautiful selection.
  • Peabody Essex Museum Gift Shop
    (Inside Peabody Essex Museum)
The one phrase you can always count on overhearing in here is: "I swear you're spending more time in the gift shop than you did in the museum!" There's good reason. It takes as long to see all the great stuff for sale here as it does to check out the galleries of maritime and asian art. Lots of great finds and a good place to knock off some items on your Christmas list.
  • Treasures Over Time
    134 Essex St.
Geodes, crystals and unusual rock sculptures. Perfect for your inner geologist. (you know you have one!)
  • New England Magic
    133 Essex
Tucked between Treasures Over Time and Witches Hide, this is the shop that seems the most focused on good old fashioned Wicca. Leather-bound spell books, incense, ointments and spell ingredients for sale. You can buy your ghost and vampire tour tickets here too.
  • Witch's Hide
    131 Essex
I think they are kidding about the name. Leather goods for sale.
  • Beautiful Things
    127 Essex St.
Fancy ladies hats and fancy lady accessories. I bought a beautiful paper star lantern complete with cord here for around $20. Lots of windchimes too.
  • The Fool's Mansion
    125 Essex St.
Corsets! Capes! Vestments! Cloaks! Buy your wenching and knaving outfits here! Also featured, Devil Girl & Emily gear.
  • Crow Haven Corner
    http://www.crowhavencorner.net
Home base of the one and only Laurie Cabot. (See: Stuff To Do) This store has been around since I was in high school. A little something for everyone, and a wide range of magickal supplies for longtime customers.
