Beginning Of A Journey

It was 2001 and I was in my office (converted attic space, actually). I had just had someone say NO (again) after I had cold called them (sound familiar?)

I sat in front of my computer utterly frustrated and I entered a (now forgotten) phrase and clicked on a site that had the words quoted above.

Below is a discussion of two self confessed SALES GURUS that I have put through the *BS* detector on your behalf (I know, you can thank me later!)

Described as "The man to call when you are tired of thinking small" is actually a very good description of Michael Port. For me, two words would describe him; passion and honesty.

If you're a seasoned professional, you'll find the fresh ideas and tactics you need to keep bringing in new business for years. It's a one-of-a-kind, step by step guide to building a successful service business from the from the ground up.

"Sales people everywhere are learning the hard way that cold calling just doesn't work anymore" - Frank Rumbauskas really takes this as his mantra and shows how to get 21st Century prospects using 21st Century technology - all without cold calling!

He draws on many of the marketing techniques used by Internet Marketers, but here's the catch - he shows you how to apply them to your business as a sales rep and how to generate a ton of qualified leads with it.

But Rumbauskas is not just about technology. He has a keen insight into the psychology of sales, espescially when it comes to the dance of power between prospect and sales rep, giving you a better understanding of how you can get and keep control of the sales appointment - even before you get there!

What I learnt from Frank Rumbauskas was how to:

Real life example:

As an alternative to cold-calling Frank recommended in his course that you create a flyer with a striking headline an offer and a call to action. The whole idea is that of self-marketing - a campign that you build to generate a consistent supply of qualified leads.

He discusses what to write on the flyer as well as some tips on design. He highlights the need to speak to one of the key motivators for your customer, decrease cost, increase profits, improve efficiency.

I followed his advice, created my flyer and set out. Instead of the usual cold-call I just left the flyer with the receptionist asking them to pass it to the responsible person and said goodbye.

They seemed releaved that I was not going to launch into some canned speech. I was happy to leave with them still smiling.

I sold fire and safety equipment as well as professional fire and safety consultancy provided by experts. I offer a free 'consultation' (an appointment) to assess their needs and as part of the offer every reply would get a domestic fire extinguisher (which cost me very little and I was happy to get a self qualified appointment for the price of a small extinguisher)

The result..?

On the first day, I was hardly a few doors away when I was getting calls. I remember the first one (I couldn't believe it) "Someone has just dropped a flyer in and I would like to meet with you to discuss our needs in this area"

For me the funniest thing was that when I arrived for the appointment THE RECEPTIONIST DID NOT RECOGNISE ME AND TREATED ME LIKE A WELCOME GUEST...not a sales rep!!

This continued and I enjoyed refining and duplicating the flyer(s). Eventually I got someone else to do it so that I had more time to go to the appointments, another of Frank's suggestions.

Will it work for every company? No. There were some companies that I knew a flyer was NOT the best approach. For these companies I used other strategies, all provided in the course!

    I got tons of leads but the sales process is long and gruling...is there anything to help with controlling your customer and speeding up to the close??? I work at the #1 rv dealer in the nation and am leading the board but I need and desire further advance...Let me know
