The community was built up around the Southern Pacific railroad which runs through it. In 1875 the community was granted a Post Office and the name of the area was then changed to Salida which in Spanish means "exit".
The modern day lay out of the town was designed in 1908 by D.T. Curtis. The trees that line the median of Broadway Ave. were planted around 1910 by the Women's Improvement Club. Salida is bordered by the Stanislaus River to the north and Modesto to it's south and east. The two major thoroughfares are Highway 99 and State Route 219. Salida currently covers approximately 1,200 acres.

A Brief History of Salida, CA
Salida is a census-designated place (CDP) in Stanislaus County, California in the United States. As of the 2000 census, the CDP population was 18,070. It ranks as the 4th most populous community in Stanislaus County.[http://www.valleymedia.org/salida/census2000.htm] It is also part of the Modesto Metropolitan Statistical Area. Cultivation of almonds has historically been a significant activity in the vicinity, including a major Blue Diamond processing facility nearby Phase I Environmental Site Assessment, Sisk Road Site, Stanislaus County, Earth Metrics Inc., Sept., 1989. In fact, this plant is involved exclusively in processing whole brown almond kernels with a "dry" process involving no water, heat or chemicals. Salida is within the East Stanislaus Resource Conservation District which comprises of land area and attends to a variety of environmental conservation and best management agricultural practices.East Stanislaus Resource Conservation District
While Salida is named for the Spanish word meaning "exit", the name is customarily pronounced according to English phonetics, as Sah-LIE-duh, rather than according to Spanish phonetics, Sah-LEETH-ah is in Colorado. Salida will be home to their first high school Joseph Gregori High School, which is on schedule to open in Fall 2010.
