Salmon Farms In British Columbia
This site on salmon farming is to give general information on salmon farming along the west coast of British Columbia. Salmon farming is a sustainable resource that creates thousands of jobs in local communities along the coast of British Columbia. We produce smolts in hatcheries then transport them to sea farms. The average farm consists of 12 100x100 foot cages, a float house, a feed barge and a mort float. As for staff, there is one Manager working a four and three shift Monday to Thursday, two Assistant Managers working opposite eight and six shifts Monday to Monday and two or three fish farm techs working opposite eight and six on Thursday to Thursday. Each farm raises roughly 500,000 Atlantic Salmon. The fish arrive at the site weighing about 80 grams and in eighteen months are harvested weighing 6 kilograms. Harvesting a site takes about two months. Then the farm goes fallow for about 6 months. Bottom testing is regulated by the government and bottom grabs are taken before start up, during mid growth cycle, during harvest and finally after all fish and nets are gone.

The Daily Fish Farmer.
A typical Fish Farmers day.
The day starts with environmental samples. We take water samples from three depths, 1m, 5m, 10m. We take the temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen(D.O) and visibility(turbidity). We then perpare slides from each water sample to look for and count harmful plankton. Once we know the water is pristine, we can go turn on the feeder. Feeding takes most of the day. Morts (dead fish) are pulled out every two days or if there seems to be more dying than usual. To finish the day its paper work, computer work and logbook entries.
