The Hair Extension Guide

There are so many methods out there, I'd like to cover 4 methods which are very popular. It is important to remember that every application method has its strength and weaknesses. You should choose a method that works best for you, not what a hair extension seller tells you (they will usually tell you their method is best without your best interests in mind).

Method 1 - Clip Ons
This method involves using clips (like hair clips) to clip extensions to your hair. They are very easy to add but you'll need to take them out each night and add again the next day. This method is great for one off occasions like weddings, formals, big nights out, presentations. Some people are happy to add and remove them every day but for many, it is too frustrating and time consuming doing this procedure every day.

Method 2 - Micro Ring (loop)
This method has been around for a few years now and has become very popular as they are quite easy to add and a full head can be added in under 2 hours (depending on who's adding them). You feel a bit of discomfort for the first 24 hours but after that, you don't really notice them. But more importantly, most other people won't know you're wearing them as the rings are hidden by your natural hair. I think they look a bit more natural than clip on extensions as each extension is added individually rather than wefts.

Method 3 - Fusion (glue in)
These extensions are attached as individual strands using a glue adhesive. It is advisable that you get a trained extension technician to add this method. A good point about this method is that it's difficult to tell they're extensions, they look really natural. However, there have been some bad stories that have come out over the past few years about this method. The main problem resulted when trying to remove the extensions and the glue caused bad shedding. My thoughts on this method is that you should be ok if you use a hair extension technician from a salon experienced in hair extensions. Make sure you do thorough research: check their before and after pics and get a few referrals from their previous customers.

Method 4 - Wefts (sewn in)
This is a method that I haven't had any personal experience with. They are a popular method but tend to take a long time to be added as the wefts are sewn into your natural hair. I hear from many clients who have had them previously that found having them added was quite painful and weren't very comfortable to wear. But don't let me talk you out of this method, just do the research on this method for yourself. And once again, use an experienced extension technician who you can trust.

I hope this helps you all out with how some of the most popular methods work. Yes, there are other methods like skin wefts; what I have listed above are methods which have been around for at least a few years and are still maintaining their popularity.

I thought I'd give a quick example of what 150 micro ring (loop) hair extensions looks like when added. I added these to my own hair and it took about 1 1/2 hours to put them in myself. I would recommend you get some help if you're adding micro ring extensions (or any extensions other than clip ons!). The main reason you'll need help is that it gets really hard on your arms reaching behind your head!
