Womens salsa shoes need to be elegant and stylish looking, and the usual etiquette for womens dance shoes require ladies to wear high-heeled sandals or stilettos which have ankles straps. The womens salsa dancing shoes are usually made of leather and the heels are necessary for the various spinning dance steps and also give that added lift that is required in dance performances. Women really need to find well fitting and highly comfortable dancing shoes because salsa dance is all about footwork and theres nothing worse than having uncomfortable shoes that make the feet ache.

The choice of mens salsa shoes are not as well known as womens dance shoes, but there are quite a few variations that can be successfully used for salsa dancing. The first type of dance shoes men can wear are normal everyday street shoes, these are great for beginners who are doing the dancing as a hobby and do not intend to take it overly serious, but are heavy and unflexible for anyone serious about their salsa dancing. The second type of dance shoes men can wear are bloch sneakers which are a sneaker/splitshoe combination, these are highly comfortable and lightweight salsa shoes which again are ideal for beginner salsa dancers, but due the rubber soles anyone wishing to improve their salsa spins will find these dance shoes are troublesome.

The third salsa shoes men can wear are jazz shoes, though these are mainly used for the other forms of dancing these are often used by beginners in dance practise due to their lightweight sock on foot appearance with suede bottoms which make performing spins and footwork very easy. These form dance shoes are not however ideal for social dancing due to the lack of protection from accidental toe stepping from the female dance partner and offer no support for the feet.

The fourth salsa shoes which are mostly popular with professional salsa dancers are the latin ballroom shoe which are a dress shoes that have suede bottoms and an elevated heal which puts all the dancers weight on to the ball of the foot which enables better execution of salsa footwork and spins.

There are of cause other types of dance shoes such as the practice sneaker ideal for dance practice or salsa lessons and the modern suede shoes which are extremely lightweight and very comfortable to wear with excellent support for the foot.

The colour of mens salsa shoes is completely up to the preference of the dancer, but white is the popular colour for salsa dance professionals who like the eyes focused on the elegant salsa footwork.
