Salt Lamp

A Salt Lamp will cleanse the air around you via natural ionization. An organic, alternative and natural means of improving health. Air quality is extremely important to our health and happiness. Some call negative ions "The Vitamins of the Air? By using Salt Crystal lamps, we can easily improve our environment, not only thorough the ionizing effects of the lamp but through the beautiful light they cast in a room! It is highly recommended to use them near a TV or computer, in a designated smoking room and an air-conditioned room. Modern life is stressful on the body. Just as more and more people are investigating the quality of the water and food we ingest, the quality of the air we breathe is extremely important to health and wellness. It is said we breathe in over 80 kilos of air each day. That is the equivalent of an Olympic sized swimming pool!

What is a Salt Lamp ?

Himalayan Crystal Rock
Salt Lamp 6-8 Pounds

Himalayan rock salt crystals formed at the foothills of the Himalayas millions of years ago. They were formed from the salt deposits of an ancient sea under the enormous pressure of the world's largest mountains. The incredibly high pressure produced the superior crystalline patterns and exceptionally beautiful translucent qualities not found in salt crystal lamps from other parts of the world.

The crystals are mined by hand, avoiding the use of explosives, and carefully shaped to retain their pristine qualities. The Himalayan salt lamps cast a warm magical glow, while cleansing the ambient air and providing the soothing effects of color on the mind and body.

Salt Crystal Lamps Enhance Air Quality

Crystal Lamp 11-13 Lb

Illuminated salt crystal lamps act as Natural Ion Generators and clean the ambient air by the alternating actions of the salt's ability to first absorb water, and then evaporate it. The salt then neutralizes any unhealthful positive ions (pollution) and emits the neutralized molecule back into the air. The ion emission process of the Salt Lamps is unique due the electrically neutral atomic structure of salt.

The ambient air surrounding the salt lamp is measurably cleaned by the transformation cycle of hydrogen and oxygen, as well as sodium and chloride ions. The greater the surface area of the salt crystals used for the lamp or lamps, the greater the ability to improve air quality. Ideal for daily use in the home, near computers and televisions, around pets, in offices and anywhere else you want to improve air quality and promote health and wellness.

Salt Crystal Lamp Color Treatment

The beauty of the Himalayan rock salt crystals is unmatched. The warm translucent glow of the crystals provide soothing vibrations of color that promotes relaxation and enhances our state of well being.

The well known principles of color therapy suggest that human beings need light waves within the rainbow spectrum (300-700 nanometers) to maintain optimal health. Some benefits associated with the colors produced by the salt crystal lamps are listed below:

  • White - Represents the healing aspect with a cleansing and detoxifying effect.

  • Orange - Helpful to our nervous system and our mind and activates the kidneys and bladder.

  • Red - Strengthens the vital life, promotes circulation and activates the heart.

  • Brown - Helps to find ones own balance and grounding.

  • Pink - Opens your emotional body while enhancing the sense of partnership and love.

Where to use Salt Lamps

  • At work :
In the office or workspace, the warm glow of a salt lamp stimulates the senses thus helping to improve focus and concentration while minimizing the effects of fatigue, stress, artificial lighting, forced air heating systems, and the radiation from office equipment and computer terminals.
  • In the home:
Salt crystal lamps are highly suitable throughout the home. A lamp in your vicinity will enhance your well-being and help purify the surrounding air. Those with allergies and asthma have found Salt crystal lamps a welcome addition to their living space.

How to Maintain Your Salt Crystal Lamp

According to salt's hygroscopic properties, salt crystal lamps should not be wet with water, kept in excessively moist conditions or be placed outdoors. The salt lamps will tolerate moisture, nevertheless, in particularly moist or humid environments, the crystal lamp surface may be slightly damp to the touch. Upon illumination, the crystal salt lamp will dry in a few hours from the small amount of heat generated.
  • Wiping with a damp cloth will remove any crystallization should it appear on the surface of your salt lamp. I recommended that you light your crystal salt lamp every day for the best results. Leave your lamp on for as long as possible. This will keep the negative ionizing process going and also prevent excess moisture build up on the lamp.
  • To clean your salt lamp, wipe with a damp (not soaking wet) towel or sponge to remove dust. After wiping clean, dry the lamp with a paper towel and turn on the crystal lamp to dry.
  • To store your salt crystal lamp for longer periods of non-use, just put a plastic bag on the lamp to seal out moisture.

Salt Lamp Shopping Guide

The beauty and benefits of Himalayan Salt Lamps are fueling a rapid growth in their popularity among North Americans. Unfortunately, all Himalayan Salt Lamps are NOT created equal. As in any other unregulated industry, the quality of the products can vary greatly from one supplier to another. A variety of factors, such as color, clarity, and carver experience , can have a significant impact on the quality and resulting price of a salt lamp. Who's Closet has been selling Himalayan Salt for many years and has had the opportunity to inspect the product offered by all of the major North American wholesalers. These below contents will share some of what we have found and give you an idea of what to look for, and the questions to ask, prior to committing to your salt lamp purchase.

Salt Lamp Color

Large Himalayan Salt

Salt in its purest form is white. Salt from the Himalayas varies in color from pure white to deep red, with every shade of pink and peach in between. This coloration is caused by iron infused within the salt crystals: the redder the salt, the higher the iron content. The most prized of these colors is a medium peach or pink and it is the color most sought after by the top manufacturers. There are a few reasons for this:

  • White Salt Lamps can be very beautiful. Unfortunately, they are also very brittle. So fragile that the slightest shock can shatter them, much like glass. On a positive note, their color can be changed simply by using a colored light bulb. This can also be done with a very light pink lamp and, for durability, we recommend that you purchase a light pink salt lamp rather than a pure white one.
  • Red Salt Lamps sold as a highly prized, rare commodity. Unfortunately, many buyers have been disappointed upon receiving these "treasures". Often a dark red salt lamp will emit very little light, regardless of the wattage of the bulb used. The high iron content blocks the light from penetrating the salt. If you prefer a darker salt lamp, we recommend that you choose one in a very dark pink rather than red.
  • Pink and Peach Salt Lamps offer the optimum combination of beauty, light and durability. A large range of shades are available, all of which are very beautiful.

Salt Lamp Size

NEW Himalayan Rock
Salt Lamp 14~17 Lbs

Traditionally, salt lamps are sold by weight: the heavier the lamp; the higher the price. There are a few reasons for this. A straight forward one is shipping cost. It costs a great deal more to ship a 15 pound salt lamp from Pakistan to North America than it does a 5 pound salt lamp and this cost will be reflected in the price of your lamp. Unfortunately, once you exceed about 20 pounds, the thickness and clarity of the salt often prevents a uniform, fully lit rock.

Salt lamps emit negative ions. It is one of the therapeutic qualities for which they are valued. We won't get into the science of negative ions and the claims made about them here. Suffice it to say, the amount of ions emitted by a lamp varies in direct proportion to the exposed surface area of the salt lamp: the larger the surface area; the greater the output of negative ions. Negative ion output drops off dramatically within a few feet of the lamp regardless of its size and ion output. As a result, if it is ionization you are looking for, you may prefer to have more salt lamps placed throughout a room rather than one excessively large one.

Salt Lamp Clarity

Natural Mini Salt Lamp

Next to the color, the clarity of a salt lamp will have the greatest impact on its aesthetic value. Clarity is determined by two factors: the purity of the salt and the temperature at which the rock salt was formed.
  • Purity - The purity of salt throughout the Himalayan mines varies greatly. A high mineral content, such as iron, can inhibit the distribution of light waves through the salt. As purity has a such a large impact on the beauty of a lamp, the top manufacturer's carefully hand-pick their salt.
  • Temperature - Salt throughout the Himalayas was crystallized at varying temperatures. Salt formed at a higher temperature has a clearer appearance than that formed at a lower temperature. The salt formed in cooler conditions often has large, flaky deposits which do not allow light to penetrate. Crystallized deposits are also very fragile and a salt lamp with large areas of these deposits can fracture easily.

Salt Lamp Shape

Ionic Crystal Salt Lamp

Natural Shaped Salt Lamps, often called "Mountain Shaped", are carved by local Artisans in Northern Pakistan. The quality of your carved salt lamp is greatly affected by the talent and experience of these Artisans. Northern Pakistan is a very impoverished region. Manufacturers offering a reasonable wage and benefits package are few and far between and, as such, they are able to hire the most qualified Carvers. Sadly, many of the salt lamp producers use child labor to keep down the costs of their items. Machinery and the care with which the lamps are created also affect the quality. Expensive drills and saws are required to produce a naturally shaped lamp.

Shaped Salt Lamps such as Pyramids, Balls, Eggs and Bowls of Fire also require expensive machinery and additional time to produce.

Unfortunately, there are only a few manufacturers willing or able to make the required capital investment in people and equipment to produce top quality salt lamps. All too often, we have seen salt lamps for sale on the wholesale market with a number of issues from sub-standard production. Among them:

         * Interior holes drilled so shallow that it is impossible to fully insert a light bulb and fixture. In addition, a shallow light fixture opening can result in the salt lamp not lighting fully and evenly.

         * The flat base cut on an angle resulting in the salt lamp leaning to one side.

         * Salt lamps which have been thrown together, without protection, in large, plastic sacks for shipping. The chipping, wear and crystallization from excessive exposure to the elements during their long trip across the ocean can have a very negative effect on an already inferior product.

When purchasing Salt Candle Holders be sure to enquire as to the depth of the hole drilled for the tealight. Often sub-standard salt candle holders will have a very shallow hole and, as a result, the salt will not glow when the candle is lit.

Salt Lamp FAQ

Himalayan Salt Lamps - Questions and Answers

  • Q: Do Salt Lamps reduce in size or lose their ionizing effect over time?

A: No, as long as you do not place them in water, over time Salt lamps will not reduce in size or lose their ionizing effect.

  • Q: What size must a Salt Lamp be to give the best results?

A: For a room size of 20 square metres, a lamp of about 2-3kg, for 30 square meters 3-4kg, 44 square meters a lamp of about 4.5-5.5kg, for 70 square meters 7-9kgs to get the optimum result. You can use several small lamps or tea lights instead as long as they amount to the same respective weight.

  • Q: Should I keep my Salt Lamp on all the time?

A: To get the best effect, keeping the lamp on as long as possible is recommended. Leaving any electrical unit unattended is not advised.

  • Q: Does the electric bill go up if the lamps stay on all the time?

A: The Lamps come with a 15 watt bulb and from my experience with them; I have not noticed the electric bill go up, even with several of them staying lit all the time.

  • Q: I have tasted salt on my lips by having the salt lamp in my house, is this normal? I actually love it and feel like it has helped me lose weight and have much more energy.

A: We have had a few people tell us that when they have a humidifier or water fountain in their homes next to the salt lamp, they can taste the salt.

  • Q: Q: How do they ionize?

A: Crystal salt is one of the few minerals whose atomic structure is bound electrically, not molecularly.

This characteristic of the mineral structure enables the crystal to change back and forth from crystalline to liquid state.

The gentle heat of the lamp in the salt crystal creates a higher surface temperature than the surrounding air. This attracts the water molecules in the cooler surrounding air. The natural humidity in the air condenses on the crystal's surface. This enables the electrically bound sodium chloride mineral to split into independent (positive) sodium and (negative) chloride ions.

This natural ionization creates an electric charge. After the water molecules evaporate again, the sodium and chloride ions turn back into their crystalline mineral form. When the sun heats up our largest natural salt solutions, the oceans, it generates the natural energy vibration of which our entire global environment consists. Salt crystal creates exactly the same natural energy field.Scientifically speaking, this natural ionization process takes place millions of times, invisible to the eye, and without any influence to the quality of the crystal. Similar to the concept whereby tree leaves absorb dangerous dioxides and transform them into essential oxygen, without damaging the plant.

The atomic structure of crystal salt contains more negative, chloride ions than positive, sodium ions which result in the emission of negative ions during the natural ionization process. Negative ions become dust collectors, attaching themselves to positively charged dust particles and cigarette smoke, purifying the circulating indoors air from dust, bacteria and pollutants.

Salt Lamp Testimonials

Salt Lamp Reviews

  • Weird But Neat, Well I'd say this is definitely one of the oddest things I own now. Neat in appearance the rock itself has a milky pink color to it. Add the electric bulb inside and that milky pink turns into a shadowy red. Very unique lighting as 2-3 of these lights a room well enough for activity but dark enough for that special privacy *wink*.
