I love this idea. I teach third grade and would like to try it with my class of 21 students. Do you have any idea how many batches of salt dough I would have to mix up? We would be doing a map of PA, and probably make it the size of 8in. by 10 in. Thanks for your help.

Thank you for this idea! I have to make a map of the whole United States for Social Studies and I don't think this will work for the entire United States. Great idea though! I would do i t if it was one state but you know. PS Your daughter is very pretty :)

What a neat idea! I tried to create many hands-on learning opportunities for my boys when they were growing up and occasionally still get to do fun things like this with my grandchildren. Regrettably, I never came up with this idea. It's a great one; hope I get other opportunities in my life to share with my beloved kids!

Great photos resources and step-by-step tutorials. I've done an 'imaginary country' applied geography that unit included a salt dough nation several times. It looks like you have done a better job of mastering the art of salt dough sculpting so I imagine I'll find myself linking to this at some point.

I used to do this as a kid and just loved the whole map thing! Really nicely done lens. :)
  • Sandwichinwi Mar 16, 2009 @ 11:40 pm | delete
An even more exciting way to get rid of your salt dough map when you are finished is to put it out on your deck IN THE RAIN! There is nothing cooler than watching your playdough melt back into goo in the rain. We "eliminated" an enormous Civil War (Battle of Bull Run/Mannassas) map in this way.

Great Lens. Your lenses are the best!

    blessings,
    Sandwich

I love anything mappy! I also think it is cool that this lens has a salt dough map of Alabama! Sweet Home!

When I lived in Denver, I flew home to the south once a month. I absolutely had to have a window seat so I could use a map to try and figure out what I was flying over. I am almost never without a map on my lap.
