Salt dough ornaments

Flour, salt and sugar = salt dough !

Those are the basic ingridients in your kitchen. But you shouldn't use them solely for the preparation of meals. If you combine all of them with a bit of water you get salt dough. Did you guess where this is going? No? Let me give you a hint: snowman, sleigh and fairy house... You will be making salt dough ornaments this Christmas!

Making salt dough ornaments

What i'm trying to say is that you can make some wonderfull Christmas ornaments using salt dough. For each ornament prepared from dough first make a plan and draw it on a piece of cardboard or paper and then transfer the model on to the flattened salt dough. Piece of cake!

Not realy, you will actually need quite a lot of experience with that but it makes a lot of fun doing it. If you will need instructions for making the perfect salt dough you should first check this salt dough recipe!

Now that you know basics you can make a fairy house that I mentioned before. First you need to prepare the dough and then flatten it to a thickness of 1/5 inch. Afterwards you need to draw each part of the house on to the dough and cut it out to the final shape. Then place each side of the fairy house on a baking paper and put it in the oven.

BE CREATIVE!
For external side walls you could make some additional cuts to make it look more realistic - this will create the appearance of logs.

You can actually choose from many different designs, materials and even those with textures!
All it mathers is that it helps you flatten the dough to the desired thickness.

Once finished with desired shape put the dough models in to the oven and bake them to the maximum of 212F. When you see that walls are a little overdone and strong enough you can take them out of the oven. You can start puting parts of a fairy house together using fresh dough to seal corners and other contacts. Now turn off the oven, wait couple of minutes for the oven to chill and then put everything back in it again to let the contacts dry completely.

You will need one of these to create snow out of beaten egg whites

IMPORTANT !!!
If the dough does not intend to be eaten, I recommended that the ornament is lacquered with spray paint. Also remember that it should be always kept in a dry place.
