Make Christmas ornaments using a simple salt dough recipe
In a special way prepared salt dough can be the basis for a number of interesting Christmas ornaments that can decorate your home or add an extra spark in the eyes of visitors.
Lets start with ingridients needed to prepare the perfect salt dough

Most important thing is that you use the same relation between those ingridients as it's written in my salt dough recipe. Anyway, it is entirely up to you how much salt dough you want to make.
Second important thing is that you use only rock salt. Trust me on this one. You shouldn't use sea salt as it binds water to itself and this may cause ornaments not to dry properly!
Ingredients
- 4 cups of flour
- 1 cup of ROCK SALT !!!
- 2 big spoons of sugar
- 2 cups of water
Instructions
First you need to mix all those ingridients to make a smooth dough mass. Then shape the dough in a ball and put it in a bowl with a lid. Now take that bowl and leave it for half an hour in the fridge for the dough to rest. Once it is chilled enough you can take it out and roll it to desired shape and thickness.
The dough then needs to be dried in an oven preheated to 176F or 212F. If we want to have the color to look a bit more brown, the oven temperature should be a maximum of 248F. When the dough gets the appropriate color and the surface is solid you can take it out from the oven.
Rock salt or sea salt?
Natural rock salt
MORTON SALT COMPANY #4458 50LB XCOR Rock Salt
Amazon Price: $8.95 (as of 06/04/2012)![]()
This is probably the cheapest rock salt that can be found on Amazon. This will do just fine if you want to use salt dough to create "non-eatable" ornaments. Otherwise I suggest you use better quality rock salt, such as Himalayan salt shown below.
HINT
If you are doing this for the first time it will be better to prepare the smaller amount of dough and create fewer less complex products such as cut-out decorations for the Christmas tree, hearts, snowflakes and stars.
Things you should be carefull about
Once you remove the salt dough from the oven, let it rest for 15 minutes. Now, you don't want the dough to dry too much before you start with creations so you should wrap it into plastic sheet of foil or you could just use a freezing bag for the same purpose and effect.
Can salt dough be colored?
Sure! Dried salt dough can be painted with tempera or acrylic paints, and it can also be lacquered. If you want to improvise with the original salt dough recipe you can do this easily just by adding acrylic paint or water tempera together with basic ingridients and knead the dough before putting it into oven. You could even decorate it with cloves - imagine this!
There are many interesting ways how to make and design salt dough...all you need to do is BE CREATIVE!
Use some acrylic paint to make salt dough more appealing

- It's funny I was just thinking about salt dough yesterday. In the 70's it was all over the place and now, it's pretty uncommon. Thanks for the revival!
