Salt Dough | Craft Ideas
It's also a great modeling dough, similar to playdough, but the kids can make this themselves and only need adult help or supervision on the cooking|drying stage and final varnish sealing stage.
Salt Dough can be colored with food coloring, natural things such as cocoa powder, paprika, saffron (although very expensive) or acrylic paint.
Or, Salt Dough can be painted once dry with poster paints, acrylic or even water color paints.
Here you can check out a video on Salt Dough and other handy craft ideas.

Colouring Salt Dough
add color to salt dough
Salt dough can be colored at this stage if you want to use different colors to make different elements of your character or craft item. This photo shows the addition of dark brown acrylic paint, which is then kneaded into the dough to create a dark brown dough, which you see has been used for the legs and ears of the salt dough sheep.
Now this can be a little messy, so you may want to use gloves. Start with a little paint, then add more, little by little, kneading into the dough as you go. If it gets too wet with paint, you can add more flour. Knead it all well.
QUESTION RECEIVED: "Can I color the dough AFTER it has been made, instead of mix the paint into the dough?" Morag
ANSWER: Yes. You can make your character or item first in plain white salt dough. Once cooked and cooled, you paint your salt dough item with any type of paint. thanks Diane

in reply to Jess You can make any sized item as long as it fits in your oven. You can use, say cardboard, or stiff paper model as a support (former) for the shape you want and roll the salt dough, then place it around the model, to support it whilst it 'cooks' (dries). Hope that helps.

in reply to Rose Yes it can be a bit sticky, experiment with a little less water maybe. You can make virtually anything.

in reply to annie Absolutely yes you can make flowers with salt dough. If you pinch it, or roll it, the dough can be thinned and shaped into virtually any flower. You can use flower cutters (as icing flower cutters) too. Have fun .
