Here is what I think about Same Sex Marriage
Same Sex Marriage
Same-sex marriage, or marriage as I like to call it, is a sensitive issue recently, especially for us here in California. Same-sex couples deserve the right to marry each other just like heterosexual couples do. It is about equality for all people. No one should be denied marriage and the benefits that come along with it.
What's Here
12 Reasons Why Same-Sex Marriage is Wrong
Yes, it is satire
- Being gay is not natural.
And real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, air conditioning, tattoos, piercings, and silicone breasts. - Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay.
In the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall. - Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior.
People may even wish to marry their pets, because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract. Blow-up dolls are next, then pencils. - Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all.
That's why women are still property, interracial marriages are forbidden, and divorce is still illegal. - Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage is allowed.
And we can't let the sanctity of Britney Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage be destroyed. - Straight marriages are valid because they produce children.
Therefore, gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry. It's not like our population isn't out of control and our orphanages aren't full- the world REALLY needs more children. - Obviously gay parents will raise gay children.
You know, because straight parents ONLY raise straight children. - Gay marriage is not supported by religion.
And in a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. - Children cannot succeed without a male and female role model at home.
Which is exactly why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children. - Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms.
Just like we haven't adapted to cars, longer life spans, or Bushisms. - Civil unions, providing most of the same benefits as marriage with a different name are better, because a "separate but equal" institution is always constitutional.
Separate schools for African-Americans worked just as well as separate marriages will for gays & lesbians. - Gay marriage should be decided by the people, not the courts
Because the majority has been historically known to protect the rights of minorities.
But What About Civil Unions?
Why they just don't cut it!
- Number of Legal Benefits:
Marriage: Over 1,049 federal and state level benefits
Civil Unions: Over 300 state level benefits. No federal protection - Medical Decisions:
Marriage: Partners can make all emergency medical decisions.
Civil Unions: Partners can only make medical decisions in the registered state. Partners may not be able to make decisions out of state. - Gifts:
Marriage: Partners can transfer gifts to each other without tax penalty.
Civil Unions: Partners are required to report federal taxes on gifts. - Death Benefits:
Marriage: In the case of a partner's death, the spouse receives any earned Social Security or veteran benefits.
Civil Unions: Partners do not receive Social Security or any other government benefits in case of death. In the case of the death of former Congressman Gerry Studds, his partner of 15 years was denied the government pension that would have gone to a legally recognized spouse. - Child/Spousal Support:
Marriage: In case of divorce, individuals may have a legally-binding financial obligation to spouses and children.
Civil Unions: In the case of dissolution , no such spousal or child benefits are guaranteed or required out of state. - Immigration Rights:
Marriage: U.S. citizens and legal residents can sponsor their spouses and family members for immigration.
Civil Unions: U.S. citizens and legal residents cannot sponsor non-legal spouses or family members. - Portability:
Marriage: Respected state to state for all purposes.
Civil Unions: Are not required to be upheld state to state. Some states refuse to acknowledge them at all. - Divorce/Ending a Civil Union:
Marriage: Partners can get divorced in any state in which they are a resident.
Civil Unions: Some states allow them to be dissolved, others don't. A civil union preformed in Vermont requires one of the partners to be a resident of the state before they will dissolve the union. - Filling out forms:
Marriage: There is a box for married, there is a box for divorced, there is even a box for separated usually!!
Civil Unions: Don't fit into any of the categories. - Social Recognition:
Marriage: Has a Universal societal understanding, honor and respect for the nature of a couple's relationship and commitment.
Civil Unions: Not universally understood. Without common understanding of their meaning, domestic partnerships don't provide the same kind of honor and respect that marriages do. - Common Residence:
Marriage: It is not required.
Civil Union: Partners must share common residence. - Name Changes:
Marriage: Allowed upon marriage.
Civil Unions: Not allowed without court order. - Privacy:
Marriage: Is recorded only at the county level, with no address on the form.
Civil Unions: Are maintained by the state with a central, public and easily-searchable database.

Yes i Agree with it! as a gay teen, i think it's perfectly fine to get married if ur gay or lesbian. we live in a country called The United States of America. Therefore were all united and free. Which means everyone SHOULD have the right to marry anyone. For all the people who are against it, just imagine if gay marriage was normal. and Straight marriage was wrong. emagine that all the gays hated you because u were straight. and we agreed for you guys not to get married. wouldnt that make you upset!?!?!?! i just think that every person should be happy. thats all i have to say because i can go on and on and on

Same sex marriage has been legal in all of Canada for a number of years and our society has "survived" just fine. People need to live and let live and stop trying to force their religious dogma onto others.

Im an older guy, Berkeley in the 60's, summer of love, Peoples Park, Vietman protests. Not comfortable with redefining ducks or coffee (hate those friggin "blends"), or marriage, for example.
It is a topic that inspires passion only in the very gay or the very right wing. The rest of us, it is a shrug. Why not Civil Union, I thought, with full legal equality? Why offend so many who regard it as a sacred relic?
But I have come around. I mean, the whole notion of "offending" in this age of WMD's, waterboarding, domestic spying, and Sara Palin is just plain moot. Furthermore, if gays want the opportunity to take their lovely relationship across the abyss and fling it into an institution with a 55% chance of failure, well, who am I to stop them?
Moreover, those prop 8 ads were scum. And the whole happiness thing, well if it makes them so happy...ok.
So go for it. But please, girls, I mean you gay couples, the ones with that TM Werner EST glazed raptureous look...please dial it back or get a room.
So yeah, it is a yes.

I have an uncle that was gay and they should have been able to get married. They were together for a long time. I think it would have made him happy.

The only thing that was wrong on your list is the religion thing. There are thousands of churches that perform gay marriage, many of them Baptist

This isn't a no on same-sex marriage. This is a resounding NO! on being a flake and not showing up to work. Penalizing your boss and place of business for personal ideology is just a poor idea over all.

- I agree with you. I am a Californian also and was very much surprised if not taken aback by the vote responses here. I thought we were a bit more mature and progressive when it came to this subject, but I guess not. I am straight myself, but find nothing wrong with two loving people marrying, regardless of gender.
