Samsonite luggage was founded by the Shwayder brothers: Jesse, Maurice, Sol, Ben, and Mark.  They started their company Shwayder Trunk Manufacturing in Denver, Colorado in the early 1900s and traveled around to drum up business promoting their trunks and their luggage. 

To reflect the quality and durability of their luggage, the Shwayders named their first products "Samson" after the powerful Biblical character because the main benefit of their cases above all other luggage available at that time was that the trunks and suitcases could take a lot of punishment and were extremely durable.  In fact for advertising purposes, the brothers and their father stood on a plank positioned on top of one of their suitcases and had their picture taken with a caption, "Strong enough to stand on."  The men together weighed more than 1,000 pounds so the Shwayder brothers were true to their word.

It was in the 1960s that the company introduced a number of new products under the Samsonite brand name.  They brought out several new travel cases, folding furniture, and a line of metal patio furniture.  The company also introduced LEGOs, the popular building blocks children all over the America enjoy.  However, by the 1970s Samsonite luggage was established as the world's top brand in luggage with manufacturing facilities in Japan, Holland, Spain, Britain, Belgium, Germany, and many other countries.
