How does 3D TV work?
Images are overlapped

Because our eyes are spaced apart from each other, the left and right retinas see objects at slightly different angles. To compensate for this the brain merges these two images into a single three-dimensional image.
To recreate this experience of depth on a television or cinema screen, a 3D recording will display two separate but overlapping images of the same scene simultaneously, at slightly different angles.
One image is intended for the left eye, the other for the right. 3D glasses help viewers perceive the two 2D images as one 3D image.
However, in early 2010, the Japanese firm Sony unveiled a single-lens camera, which is especially suited for sporting events. The camera takes a single image that is split by mirrors and recorded on two sensors.

The 2010 World Cup in 3D
Limited to three countries

Sony and the world's football governing body FIFA shot 25 World Cup matches in 3D. The matches included the opening game, three of the quarter finals, both semi finals and the World Cup final.
Licensing was been agreed with some TV Networks and providing you were living in the US, Spain and South Korea AND you had the right equipment you were able to watch these 2010 World Cup matches in 3D in your own home.
The UK was not included in the deal and while the BBC and ITV had broadcasting rights they did not screen any matches in 3D. However, the BBC's Director of London 2012, Roger Mosey, has said there are plans to capture some of the London 2012 Olympics in 3D.

- I like Samsung TVs but not their 3D models because it uses active technology. I got serious eye strains and headaches from flickering of active 3D glasses. I would rather go with LG which I heard is certified flicker free 3D and since I read many positive reviews on their TV sets. But your review was great. Thanks for the info!

- I would love to get a new 3D TV. I bought an HDTV when they first came out and it weights a TON. It takes 3 people to lift it, something I didn't know when I purchased it in 2005. I guess it's antique now!
