Most dental implants are advocated to give back missing teeth or to better anchor dentures. Dental implants are periodically used by the orthodontist for tooth anchoring to help assist with tooth movement. Other options besides implant placement may include, leaving the situation as is, partial denture (dentures that come out but our anchored to other teeth), full dentures or traditional crown and bridge work. If the teeth aren't replaced, the bone where the tooth was is likely to atrophy or shrink. Dental implants not only create a foundation to secure a tooth, teeth or a denture, but also continue to stimulate the bone and stop its deterioration.
Dentures that are not held in place by endosseous implants, commonly do not have great stableness and the patient must restrict their options for food and even how they talk and smile. Moreover, patients complain about having to take the prosthetics in and out all of the time. If enough implants are placed, dentures can either be retained in a long lasting fashion or the patient can be converted to a fixed case (crowns and bridges). If patients are asked to distinguish between the solidness of dentures retained with dental implants to those prosthetics that are not retained by implants, the standard response is, "you cannot compare the two, it is like night and day."
For a single tooth replacement implants offer a exceptional advantage over common bridge work. If you lose a tooth between two other teeth, the customary method of its replacement is a bridge. That is where the dentist reduces down the two neighboring teeth to put crowns on them and the fake tooth called the pontic is suspended between those crowns. If those adjoining teeth did not have any fillings or had conservative one, then those teeth have been compromised. The other common objection with bridges is the difficulty with hygiene. When a bridge is placed, you cannot floss between the teeth. You have to use particular tools to clean around the bridge and use floss threaders to clean gums around the bridge. With dental implants, typically there is no change to your hygiene habits. Your brushing and flossing habits remain the same.
Occasionally patients will not be candidates for implants because of medical conditions and some medication contraindications. Some patients in order to become implant candidates will have to undergo bone and/or soft tissue surgery or surgeries prior to or in conjunction with dental implant placement. Therefore, it is paramount for your restorative doctor and your implant surgeon to communicate between you and themselves to create a treatment that meets your expectations.
Unfortunately most patients are not well schooled on dental implants by their dental professional and have to obtain the information on their own. Fortunately today, through the wonders of the internet, patients can educate themselves on the procedures and discipline of dental implant surgery. Since dental implants are more than likely to last a lifetime, it is crucial to spend some time and educate yourself on dental implants before proceeding witha particular procedure and/or a particular doctor.
