The Wild Sand Cat - Cutest Kittens Ever

Ranked #3,859 in Pets & Animals, #97,001 overall | Donates to Big Cat Rescue

They are able to survive for months on the water in their food.

The Sand Cat is a relatively small, stocky cat with short legs, a long tail, and large pointed ears. They range from 15 to 22 inches in length, not including a foot-long tail. Among the smallest of the wild cats, the Sand Cat adult weighs between 3 and 7-1/2 lbs.

The sand cat's body is well adapted to desert life - its thick, medium length fur insulates it against the extreme cold of the desert nights and its feet and pads are covered with long hair which protects them from the heat of the desert surface and gives it extra support needed in moving across the soft, shifting sands. The large triangular ears are very sensitive to sound.

They are able to survive for months on the water in their food.

Some people divide this species into four sub-species: the African population, the Arabian population, the Turkmenistan population and the Pakistan population.

We are proud to have some of the happiest cats around. And right now our sand cats are at the top of that list as they love their new sand. A BCR supporter named Lindsay chose to have her friends give money to donate to a project for us rather than spend it on gifts for her. When donating money you can earmark the donation and tell us exactly what you want that money to go to. She picked a "Casper project" (named after a cougar we all loved) and wanted sand to be put in our sand cat enclosures. We were happy to add to her donation, so we could get three huge loads of sand.
Watch along as our sand cats Canyon and Genie explore and check out their homes.
We truly have the best supporters in the world.

Felis margarita

The sand cat (Felis margarita), also referred to as the "sand dune cat", is a small cat distributed over African and Asian deserts. (The name "desert cat" is reserved for Felis silvestris lybica, the African wildcat.) The sand cat lives in arid areas that are too hot and dry even for the African Wildcat: the Sahara, the Arabian Desert, and the deserts of Iran and Pakistan.

Victor Loche was the first European to describe the sand cat for science (in 1858). He named the species Felis margarita after Jean Auguste Margueritte, the leader of the expedition during which he had encountered the animal.
