Sandbanks - Millionaires Paradise In The UK

Sandbanks is a sandy peninsula in the county of Dorset, in the middle of the South Coast of England. It forms the southern part of the entrance to Poole Harbour, which is the second largest natural harbour in the world after Sydney in Australia.

Sandbanks is only a mile long, and at it's narrowest just wide enough for a 2 lane road, with the harbour on one side, and a row of luxury houses on the other. These houses back onto the beach, making it the British equivalent of Malibu in California.

This beautiful spot has in the last 20 years become home to more and more of Britain's millionaires.

Gone are some of the older art-deco homes that were built from the 1930's to the 1960's, and in their place are now multi-million pound mansions, owned by major Sports or Television personalities.

As of 2008, Sandbanks is the fourth most expensive place in the world to buy property, based on land.

What Is My Interest In Sandbanks?

At the northern end of Sandbanks is a small village called Lilliput. I was born there, and spent my first 18 years there before moving to university, and then to live in London.

My grandmother had in the 1950's and early 1960's (until her death) various properties in Sandbanks, and another side of the family also owned 2 houses on the main narrow part of Sandbanks. I have some family photos from the 1950's and 1960's of Sandbanks, which you will find in later modules.

What makes Sandbanks So Popular?

Much of the south coast of England has nice beaches, however a lot of the beaches to the east of the city of Southampton, which is in the middle of the south coast, are shingle - stony and not so nice for sunbathing.

Southampton is a port, and the coast around there is also muddy or marshy, also not so good for bathing.

When you get west of Poole and into the Purbeck Hills, the scenery becomes more rugged, with lots of limestone cliffs, which are rich in fossils, but few good beaches.

The area from Hengistbury Head in the east, which is close to Christchurch, all the way west past Boscombe and Bournemouth, to Canford Cliffs and Sandbanks, and across the harbour entrance to Studland and around to Swanage, is just perfect golden sand. The beaches are fairly narrow, the water is warm for bathing, warmed by the Gulf Stream that has carried warm water from Florida and the Caribbean, and the area has more sunshine than almost anywhere in England.

Ontario, Canada has a Sandbanks in Picton, Ontario. We go there at least once in the Summer every year. The sand is as white as Panama City Beach, Florida sand; but the water before end of July (St. Lawrence River) is youser cooooooold! Still worth it though!

About poddys

I am an English guy who moved to the USA in 1994, spent 12 years in Indiana, then moved to South Florida in 2005.  I have a background in computers, have run my own web sites since 1998, spend more time working than I would like (as do we all)...

I enjoy travel and have travelled a lot in the past, spending a year in New Zealand, plus 12 years of frequent travel to Central and South America and the Caribbean for work.  Meeting a lot of people from different cultures and experiencing different ways of life has taught me that wealth or background do not make a good person, neither does race, colour or religion.  I have met some wonderful people on my travels, and one of the best things I have found is that laughter is one of the best ways to make friends.

I love humor, and have run a jokes mailing list for the last 7 years, helping make thousands of people laugh around the world.

I have been interested in ancient civilizations since I was in my teens. I never imagined that I would ever do any exciting travelling, but then had the opportunity to work in Central America, allowing me to visit the great Mayan ruins at Tikal (Guatemala) and Copan (Honduras) as well as lesser ones in El Salvador. I also have been fortunate enough to visit the pyramids outside Mexico City at Teotihuacan.

One of my main interests is Ancient History. The Greeks, Romams and Egyptians of course, plus the Mayans and Incas, but my main interest lies with pre-history, Sumeria, Babylon, and the cradle of civilisation.

It's a fascinating subject, reading up about things like Atlantis, the Origins of Mankind, whether the Gods Of Old came from another planet, whether there were highly advanced civilisations on earth before the great flood, etc etc. You can read more of this by visiting my Zecharia Sitchin lens. I hope you will.
