Sandisk Sansa Fuze: A Review and Comparison

Ranked #7,156 in Computers & Electronics, #150,188 overall

A Review of the Sansa Fuze MP3 Player

The Sansa Fuze MP3 Player is a credit card sized player packed with great options. It is so easy to carry along when you are out for a jog, waiting in the doctor's office, or just headed out for a day of errand running.

Sansa players are great for preteens and teens. They are cheap enough that many kids can save up to buy one with their own money and aren't too complicated for them to operate. Not having to spend an hour trying to figure out how to turn on your new MP3 player? Priceless!

Because they are so much less expensive than some other brands and kids can learn to operate them so easily, some adults dismiss the Sansa Fuze as an MP3 player for kids. That's a big mistake, since the storage capacity, many features and small size of this model make it just as useful for a busy grownup. (Love the memo feature!)

The 8gb Sansa Fuze MP3 player has a ton of features for a low price. And with 8 gigabytes of memory, you've got plenty of storage. I put four huge audio books on my 4 gb model along with songs and am nowhere near the storage limit. If the massive 8 gb of space isn't enough for you, though, you can easily add more space with memory cards.

Is the Sansa Fuze Better Than the iPod nano?

Cheap MP3 Player Comparison

We have both the Sansa Fuze and the iPod nano. Whether one is better than the other is pretty subjective, I guess, but we definitely prefer the Sansa brand. Here's why:
* The nano costs at least twice as much. If you get the Fuze on sale, it costs up to three times as much.
* Our nano freezes up A LOT and it doesn't look like we are the only ones with that problem.
* We have to use iTunes software, which doesn't seem to agree with the computer. Maybe it is just my computer, but I don't have time to reboot, find out I lost something I was working on and still not have the thing synced.

On the other hand, the nano does make videos on the go. You thought your Flip was nice and compact? The nano is downright skinny. You also get a handy pedometer.

Overall, for us, the Sansa Fuze works better, but I'm sure there are many nano lovers out there that think it is the best thing ever.

Do You Need the Sansa Fuze 8gb MP3 Player?

Comparing the Sansa Fuze 8gb and the Sansa Fuze 4gb models

You want to download every song known to man on your Sansa Fuze, take your digital photo album on the go and enjoy a few movies. So, is the 8gb media player the one you should go for? Probably. But you could also get a 4gb or even a 2gb player and be just fine.

Sansa is made by Sandisk, which specializes in on the go storage. You can get SanDisk cards for all the Sandisk Sansa MP3 players and have limitless storage. However, it can be frustrating to keep track of a lot of little cards, so if you are storing a ton of stuff on your player, you may want to go for the largest possible memory.

Is a Sansa Charger Necessary?

Getting a Sansa Fuze Dock or Charger Versus Using Your PC to Charge

We don't have a charger for our Sansa Fuze, but I want one. The charger lets you juice up your MP3 player battery without having to head to your computer. So, if you want to charge it in a room that doesn't have a computer, you are traveling and don't want to lug your laptop along, or you are taking such a long trip that you will run out of juice and need a car charger, a charger is necessary. If you are just using it once in awhile for a few hours, you can probably do without one.

A docking station is a really nice option, too. It makes it easy for you to enjoy your Sansa's content at your desk without worrying about wearing your headphones and helps you avoid knocking that wafer thin player off of your desk by accident.

Sansa Fuze Accessories

Sansa MP3 Player Accessories Help You Protect Your Player and Do More With It!

You can play your Sansa Fuze right out of the box without worrying about buying any accessories, but you can do more if you do buy a few. I don't know if it is just me, but I find the ear buds that come with the player to be uncomfortable. I recommend upgrading to slightly better headphones and, if you don't buy a dock with speakers in it, buying a set of speakers.

Another accessory I really think you should consider is a case. Dropping any MP3 player without a case can mean a cracked screen or worse. A case is designed to absorb the blow and protect your player from damage.

Accessories you don't necessarily need, but can make things a lot more enjoyable, include portable speakers, an arm band and a belt clip. If you are planning to go jogging or do anything else athletic with your MP3 player, you'll want a belt clip or arm band. We've had ours fall out of pockets enough that we thought a clip was a very worthwhile investment!

I don't have a music player of any sort although there are a couple of old MP3 players and a few new iPods floating around my home. I'm thinking though that it is a bit time I purchased one for myself.
