Sandwich Generation Defined

Sandwich Generation Senior Home Care Givers are family members who are caring for the elderly relatives in their family. Usually the aging relative is a parent but sometimes it's an aunt, uncle, or even a close family friend. Between my parents and myself, we've done all of that at one or more times in our lives. The family members may live in our homes, live in their own homes nearby, live in their own homes far away, or live in some type of care facility close by or far away. Even with care facilities, it's so important to have a relative or close family friend overseeing their care as well as visiting them, writing them, and finding other ways to encourage them.

For the Sandwich Generation, that's only half of the work. At the same time we are being care givers for the elderly relatives, we are also taking care of kids - either our own kids who are still at home, or grandkids - in our home or in their own home, and sometimes all of the above. For several years, that was me. Now my kids are all grown and on their own, but I am still heavily involved with helping grandkids due to special needs - and having a blast doing so!

Because we are busy care giving for the older generation and the younger generation, it's like they are each a slice of bread and we are the meat in the middle, coupled with some mayonnaise to glue it all together. And that's how the name, Sandwich Generation, came about. :)

Words of Encouragement for the Sandwich Generation

Encourage Others and Yourself with Inspirational Bible Verses

Powerful Words of Encouragement for the Sandwich Generation are Found in Inspirational Bible VersesI have plenty of Sandwich Generation "tools" that I use as I go about my day helping my senior moms, my grandkids, and other special people God has put into my life. Many of my best tools are inspirational Bible verses. God's Word keeps me going throughout the day, encourages me when I am down, and teaches all of us how best to live. Some of my favorite verses for the Sandwich Generation include:

A gray head is a crown of glory ; It is found in the way of righteousness. Proverbs 16:31 NAS

The glory of young men is their strength, And the honor of old men is their gray hair. Proverbs 20:29 NAS

The righteous man will flourish like the palm tree, He will grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Planted in the house of the LORD, They will flourish in the courts of our God. They will still yield fruit in old age ; They shall be full of sap and very green. Psalm 92:13-14

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23:4

Grandchildren are the crown of old men. Proverbs 17:6a NAS

Encourage one another and build each other up. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 NIV

Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You. Psalm 119:11 NAS

Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path. Psalm 119:105 NAS

This is the commandment, the statutes and the judgments which the LORD your God has commanded me to teach you...so that you and your son and your grandson might fear the LORD your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged. Deuteronomy 6:1-3

Aren't those encouraging inspirational Bible verses! Great truth for the young, the old, the in-between. And powerful reminders to those of us in the Sandwich Generation to come along side our own kids to help teach God's Word to their kids, our precious grandkids! As we do that, we are building a spiritual legacy in them and what a joy that is! Then, perhaps, someone will say of us, as Paul did to Timothy, "I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well." What an awesome legacy that is!

I'm not much on Bible quotes but I am an "unsandwiched generation" in that I care for my Mom but have no children - only 6 dogs, 1 confused cat and a more confused bird. Great lens though.

My mom is 90, and is now in assisted living, which takes some of the burden off me, but I still spend a lot of time with her and make sure she's properly cared for. She loves it there, and wants to be there, so that is good. I always find it refreshing to spend time with my grandchildren. They're so young and full of life, it really makes my day!

I am sort of in the generation. I'm my 95 year old Mom's main caregiver and thankful every single day that I have her. I love your articles about the elderly.
