As a neurosurgeon I deal with patients with brain and spine problems.

These include patients with brain tumours, brain haemorrhage, hydrocephalus, chiari malformations and facial pain. Spinal problems include patients with sciatica, back pain, spinal claudication, spinal stenosis, neck pain and arm pain especially brachalgia.

I also deal with patients with carpal tunnel syndrome and ulna nerve compression. Over recent years neurosurgery has expanded exponentially and treatment are now also available for patients with cerebral palsy, with the insertion of intrathecal baclofen pumps, parkinsons disease and epilepsy.

BRAIN TUMOR
Biography: Born in London, I was educated at Ilford County Grammar School for Boys and then at the Victoria University of Manchester. After gaining the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons England I trained in neurosurgery in Nottingham. This was followed by a fellowship at the Necker Hospital in Paris and then at the Montefiore Hospital in New York, USA. On returning from the New York I worked as a paediatric neurosurgical fellow at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford. I then took up post as a Consultant in Adult and Paediatric Neurosurgery at King's College Hospital and Guy's Hospital.
SCIATICA
Sciatica is extremely common. Most people have a 80-90% chance of having back pain in their life time. Of these patients 1-3% go on to have sciatica. Sciatica usually occurs when a disc in the back "slips" and presses on the nerves that run down to the legs. The symptoms may start with mild back pain, however the most disturbing symptom is pain running down the leg.
BACK PAIN
Most patients who have back pain resolve within 4 weeks. This is due to the fact that the body has an amazing healing capacity. Some patients may proceed onto chronic back pain and a small proportion have a more serious underlying problem.
