Ranked #2,584 in Movies & TV, #71,728 overall | Donates to A Day of Hope

UK Sci Fi Series Created By Peter J. Hammond, Produced by ATV, Broadcast on ITV from 1979-1982

Joanna Lumley (Absolutely Fabulous) and  David McCallum (Man From UNCLE) star as Sapphire and Steel, two entities, or elements, who help deal with weak spots in the corridors of Time. Time itself is portrayed as a malevolent, invasive force, coursing through the Cosmos, looking for its next opportunity to intrude and wreak havoc on humanity.

Sapphire and Steel seem to be opposites in almost every way. Sapphire (Lumley) shows empathy and compassion to the people who are caught in the anomolies of Time, while Steel (McCallum) is aloof, almost to the point of being put out at having to once again step into the breach for the silly weaklings he's been sent to help.

Sapphire possesses telepathic and mind control abilities, as well as the power to 'take back time'- kind of like TiVo. She can touch objects or people and discern almost everything about them, and she has an almost infinite wardrobe of garish clothing and wigs.

Steel has intense strength, some telekinetic powers and the ability to freeze things to absolute zero. While he doesn't get any points for his people skills, he is very thorough and willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done, including sacrificing any innocent bystanders who happen to fit in with his plans.

A word to the wise: BUY THE SERIES! This is a show you have to watch many times to understand fully. There are subplots and twists that you will want to watch over again, and you'll still find something you missed that last time. I don't recommend it for small children, as some of the situations are intense and disturbing.

So that's the main idea, I don't want to give too much away. The show is fairly vague and open ended about a lot of things, and I like it that way. It gives you the chance to fill in the blanks yourself. It will certainly keep you guessing...

Enjoy!

"All irregularities will be handled by the forces controlling each dimension. Transuranic heavy elements may not be used where there is life. Medium atomic weights are available: Gold, Lead, Copper, Jet, Diamond, Radium, Sapphire, Silver and Steel. Sapphire and Steel have been assigned."

~Monologue From The Opening Credits Of "Sapphire & Steel"

Sapphire and Steel: Rhiannon

Sapphire and Steel: Rhiannon

This is as a song about an old welsh witch... but in the sense that it's about Sapphire from Steel's point of view and as such is one of neediness, love, suspicion and total and utter dependence.... The story of the video is that Steel is falling towards being mortal in that he's made a choice and going against authority and that he's having independence, which will basically leave him in a sort of hell-like cafe-eternity ( yeah i dunno either) and is wondering if Sapphire loves him enough to jump with him... Made in response to bigbluemeanys demands that i explain my ( admitedly somewhat weird) sapphire and steel theory with the assistance of visual aids.... Given that half the fun of sapphire and steel is in the interpretation please feel welcome to comment below explaining what you think about a.) the Steel and Sapphire relationship. b.) who they were and c.) What the hell was going on.....
