Into the Wilderness by Sara Donati

Sara Donati weaves a grand adventure set in the pioneering days of New York, building on The Pioneers by James Fenimore Cooper and mixing in some Jane Austen style characters. This book series could be classified as historical fiction or historical romance. The amount of historical research that must go into each novel is incredible and the stories are completely captivating. I am very interested in the characters and still wondering what happens to each of them, even though it has been quite a while since I read the last book. I've been eagerly awaiting Book Six, which I hear is due out in 2009. Sadly, I'm also hearing that it will be the last in the series.

Sara Donati's Into the Wilderness Plot Summary

Elizabeth Middleton has come from England to New York to live with her father and brother on the pretext that she will be a teacher in a school her father will build for her. It turns out that her father has ulterior motives. He intends to marry her off to a man who holds lands that he wants to control. Being the independent young woman that she is, Elizabeth falls in love with another man and will have none of it. This is the tale of the love story and the grand adventures of Elizabeth and Nathaniel Bonner.

Into the Wilderness (Paperback)

by Sara Donati #1 in the series

"Epic in ambition, heaving-bosomed and lavish with pioneer life, Donati's debut inevitably invites comparison to the Revolutionary War-era romances of Diana Gabaldon. Claire Fraser, Gabaldon's time-traveling physician heroine, even makes a cameo appearance as a battlefield surgeon."

Into the Wilderness is an intelligent and beautifully written historical novel that draws the reader into another world. Elizabeth and Nathaniel are well-rounded and intelligent characters, and the secondary characters are also strong, three-dimensional, and often entertainingly quirky. Although the book is long--nearly 700 words--tight pacing makes it an entertaining read. Fans of Diana Gabaldon will want to watch for a cameo appearance by one of the characters of Gabaldon's stunning Outlander series. --Lisa Wanttaja

Dawn on a Distant Shore (Mass Market Paperback)

by Sara Donati #2 in the series

Sara Donati's novel Dawn on a Distant Shore picks up soon after the conclusion of her prior book, Into the Wilderness. In the winter of 1794, on the edge of the New York wilderness, Elizabeth and Nathaniel Bonner have settled into the comforts of domestic bliss. Typically, however, adventure seeks these two out. Alone but for her stepdaughter Hannah, Elizabeth gives birth to twins, while Nathaniel and his father Hawkeye are imprisoned in Montreal. Determined to help her men, Elizabeth packs up the children and sets off to free them. Liberty does not bring relief to the Bonner clan, however, as sinister forces conspire to pirate them to Scotland and embroil them in a complex family feud.

History and adventure are slathered on thickly throughout this epic tale. Donati's talent for dialect and detail bring the large cast of characters to life, though the steady pace of dramatic catastrophe is somewhat exhausting. Will our heroes never get a break? Fans of Donati's earlier work will enjoy seeing the familiar characters, but new readers would benefit by reading the books in the series in order. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

Set in late-eighteenth-century upstate New York on the edge of the frontier, Donati's latest novel continues the story of Elizabeth, Nathaniel, and Hannah (Nathaniel's half-Indian daughter) Bonner, other members of their extended family, and the various cast of quirky, ill-behaved, or good and honorable characters inhabiting the lonely town of Paradise.

Fire Along the Sky (Mass Market Paperback)

by Sara Donati #4 in the series

Continuing her epic Bonner family saga, Sara Donati opens this episode in 1812, when Nathaniel's daughter Hannah, recovering from the tragic loss of her husband and child, returns home to Paradise. Infected with "war fever," all the young men of Paradise are ready to enlist, including Daniel, Hannah's 18-year-old stepbrother. Adventure, romance, frontier lore, and the effects of war on those at home are all part of this sprawling tale of early American life in the Northeastern wilderness.

Donati continues the saga of the valiant Bonner family, last seen in 2002's Lake in the Clouds, in this sprawling epic starring four formidable women. It's 1812, and Elizabeth Bonner-teacher, crusader and second wife of hunter/trapper/farmer Nathaniel-is still living in a mountain cabin above the village of Paradise in upper New York State. With her is her restless, independent daughter, Lily, whose plans to study art in England were dashed by the beginnings of the war. Nearby in Montreal is the newly widowed Scotswoman Lady Jennet, who has come to the new world to find the man she should have married, Nathaniel's son Luke. And arriving presently is Hannah, Nathaniel's half-Mohawk daughter by his first wife; after 10 years as a healer with her mother's people, Hannah comes home to recover from a terrible personal tragedy.

Queen of Swords (Mass Market Paperback)

by Sara Donati #5 in the series

In the fifth volume of her popular Wilderness series, after Fire along the Sky (2004), Donati sweeps readers into two strong women's personal journeys of rescue and redemption. It is 1814 in the French Antilles, where Scots noblewoman Jennet Scott Huntar is being held captive. But when her future husband, Luke, and his half-sister, Hannah, finally locate and free her, their troubles have just begun. To ensure the safety of her son, born during her imprisonment, Jennet had made a devil's bargain with a dissolute, untrustworthy man.

Queen of Swords

Amazon Price: $7.99 (as of 12/18/2009)Buy Now

As the trio travels from Pensacola to New Orleans in their attempts to learn the child's whereabouts, Jennet struggles to heal herself and her marriage, while Hannah, half-Mohawk, uses her medical training to help the city's Indian populace and faces deadly illness herself. It's both a smoothly written, engrossing adventure about an early American family and a vivid depiction of the little-explored War of 1812, yet it's more than that. Donati also delves into much deeper realities, such as race and prejudice in one of America's famously multicultural cities, the complex patterns of revenge, the price of loyalty during wartime, and the transformative power of love. Avid historical fiction and romance readers will devour it. Sarah Johnson

Sara Donati and Diana Gabaldon

Into the Wilderness and Outlander

Many people who like Sara Donati also enjoy Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. The two authors became friends online and began to critique each others' writing. Here is an excerpt from an interview that Sara did with Linda Richards of January Magazine regarding her friendship with Diana:

"We met online, through a third party and started conversing just normally in the regular context of conversation. Then once in a while she'd show me something she was working on and I'd show her something I was working on. This was before Into the Wilderness sold. She was extremely supportive. She's a very generous person. I had an agent at the time that I wasn't really happy with and she introduced me to the agent I have now. The funny part is -- and most of her readers will know -- is that when I was doing the research for Into the Wilderness there's a flashback to the battle of Saratoga which was a major battle in the revolutionary war. I was doing the research on the battle of Saratoga and Diana said to me, 'Hey my characters are in the battle of Saratoga.' It was the first time our storylines intersected. And I said, 'Well, I've got this injured boy over here and Nathaniel is looking for a doctor. Can I have Claire?' I was completely joking. And Diana said, 'Sure. I'll send her over.' So her characters show up briefly in my storyline."

They each are frequently asked if Sara Donati and Diana Gabaldon are the same person but they both assure people that they are indeed separate persons.

I have read ALL the books of both Sara Donati and Diana Gabaldon and they are EASILY the best I have EVER read.
Both authors have the ability to draw you in and make you part of the story, not just a casual bookreader/onlooker.
When I finished their last books so far in their series (read in record times, I might add) I felt like I lost best friends.......
    Eagerly awaiting next installements!
