When Sarah Palin bounded on the political scene in 2008, I couldn't help but notice her upswept hairdo—one of my old standbys—the updo ponytail. The former beauty queen has been accused of frumpifying herself by piling her hair on top of her head. Critics are appalled by the former VP contender's use of a plastic chip clip to secure her locks. Others are pleased by her departure from the helmet head bob so prevalent among her female politician counterparts. Either way, tongues are wagging, and hairstylists and wig sellers all over the U.S. have reported a sudden demand for Sarah Palin's trademark updos.

Keep it long. My godmother's hair was still down to her waist when she was 80 yrs. old. She had the softest and most beautiful gray hair. She always wore it up during the day, but at night she would comb it out and wear a cap to bed.

Please people, educate yourselves about what she stands for and what implications it has for future American foreign policy. Your instincts are correct, don't trust her. While Tina Fey seemed to effortlessly mimic Sarah Palin's mannerisms and speech patterns on Saturday Night Live, it took more than 50 hours to create her not-ready-for-prime-time tresses. Preparing the wig was no easy task, according to SNL hairstyling-department head Bettie Rogers. The process involved a hairdresser, a team of wig makers, several colorists, and a pound of specifically styled human hair. "We read the sketches on Wednesday night to determine the wigs to be built at Bob Kelly's, a wig maker on 46th Street," explained Rogers. "The ladies who make the wigs work around the clock until Friday night, sometimes even late Saturday." The finished product was a cross between a French twist and a '60s bouffant with bangs. SNL hairstylists went to work painting darker colors at the roots to give to give the hair additional contrast. On the day of the taping, when the wig was finally placed on Fey's head, only minor adjustments to the bangs were needed. According to Rogers, the wig has been properly stored at SNL, along with a cork-and-canvas replica of Tina Fey's skull, which was used for fitting numerous wigs during her regular role on the show from 1997 to 2005.

Great fun lens. As far as politicians' hair dos go I think Sarah Palin looks fairly normal, when compared to Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London or Yulia Tymoshenko, the Prime Minister of Ukraine.
