First Female Alaskan Governor and 2008 Republican VP Candidate

John McCain caught everyone off-guard when he announced Sarah Palin as his running mate for the 2008 GOP presidential ticket. The grass-roots effort to get Palin on the ticket had been gaining ground since the beginning of the year when she first started gaining attention from the party faithful. Rush Limbaugh started the push for Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin, right down to designing a logo for a McCain-Palin ticket.

She made a name for herself with the campaign and is sending out feelers to see what she can do with that name. Embracing her "rogue" status, Palin seems to want to keep people guessing whether she'll really take a run at the presidency, shoot for a policy job or hit an anchor desk. We're watching.

Palin Resigns: What Do You Think?

Looks like we might get to see some of your predictions below come true? It's incredibly early, but now that Palin is stepping aside, what's next for her? And do we care?

Do You Think We'll See Sarah Again in 2012?

There's already talk that Sarah has her eye on 2012 for a presidential run. Think we'll see her then? Think America's had enough? Think she has a chance? Think she's lost any hope of a nomination or victory?

Make a prediction here!!

My prediction:

SusanVillasLewis, at 4pm on November 3, 2008 predicts:

She could go for fame and fortune as a pundit, but the lure is too strong for her and she'll run.

Kathie, at 2pm on September 3, 2009 predicts:

I predict that Sarah will go on to do great things! She is amazingly motivating and really excites some of the Republican Base.

John S, at 8am on July 28, 2009 predicts:

I think she has shot herself in the foot and no amount of surgery will fix it. She's a quitter, just what we need in the White House when North Korea starts pointing their nukes at us.....

karen, at 3pm on July 8, 2009 predicts:

I agree with CoolFoto - Sarah Palin should became a US Senator first. She needs more than being Alaska's Governor and now that she has quit that she has even less experience.

Jeffrey Miles, at 6am on July 8, 2009 predicts:

I hope she runs. I could use the laughs.

J Robert Hayes sr, at 11am on July 2, 2009 predicts:

This Country so needs Sara as our President. People say they want change and have looked to the wrong person for that, I pray we survive him. The kind of change that our Country needs scars the dickens out of the political status quo. Sara would not only clean house but her integrity would once again instill the morals and ethical standards that America is supposed to be about. I do predict her as our next President and pray that be so, we need her.

Vice Presidential Debate

October 2 at Washington University in St. Louis

vpdebate

The vice presidential debate was held Oct. 2 at Washington University in St. Louis, the only one this year. (They ought to schedule a few more just for fun.) Gwen Ifill, a longtime correspondent and moderator for public broadcasting programs The NewsHour and Washington Week, served as moderator.

The format was for something fairly similar to the presidential debates. No limit on subject matter, using lecturns instead of sitting at a table, and shorter time for answers and discussion than at the presidential debates.

Vice Presidential Debate Winner?

Not quite like school, but let's hear why you think your choice won as well!

Transcript of the debate available from CNN.

Joe Biden

sidney says:

Sarah Palin was a total disgrace, and people's attempt to sugar coat this is disgusting. Palin is an arrogant dumb person who doesn't know they are dumb. She actually thinks she could run in 2012 and have a chance to win. What an incredible joke. I believe everything the
McCain Advisors are now saying. Sarah Palin lies too much to belive her.

JO says:

Joe Biden hands down Sarah has no knowledge whats so ever get a grip people she was a big joke and it was actually on her.She needs
to brush up on politics she has no idea

Sarah Palin

Lindsey says:

Sarah Palin is a winner and some people always hate winners. Sarah Palin should run in 2012 and if her and Huckabee team up they will win the election. I believe that these 2 can bring America back to its true greatness!!!!!!!!!

fiona says:

the woman doesnt know what she's doing. john mccain made a bad decission.. palin is lost and confused.. can you picture her discussing about whats happening in iraq

isabel says:

I think SARAH because she is very sucessful in many things.

againstsocialism says:

so your ready to give away 1/3 of your paycheck to someone who has just as much experience as Sara Palin, but is in the president spot not the vice president spot. Sounds like you all are very educated

Bubba123 says:

I just read the Washington Post article about how Sarah Palin is going back to using her own wardrobe. So now Sarah wants to get back into her own clothes?... now that the whole sordid shopping trip was made public! Why didn't she say, "Thanks, but no thanks" when the clothes were first offered??? Folks like Elizabeth Hasselbeck (her credentials: a reality TV "star") want to minimize the issue, but it IS important -- very telling about who Sarah really is... Most folks don't even make $150K a year. In this economic crises, $150,000 would buy a lot of groceries for a lot of people. It would buy a nice home in many communities. How dare she claim to be like "one of us" and then parade around in such extravagance. It's obscene. This whole issue tells you much about the REAL Sarah Palin. Sarah Palin was chosen as VP for several reasons, not the least of which is that she is a woman. John McCain thought that all those Clinton supporters were only voting for Hiliary BECAUSE she is a WOMAN. (Isn't that alone a slap in the face to woman everywhere?) So he thought Sarah would make a great substitute. (He didn't realize that woman would recognize the difference in intellect and experience between the two; he thought it was enough that they are both woman.) Sarah is being "used." McCain chose Sarah Palin because, for the most part, she is (was ) an empty slate that they could fill with whatever they chose. They selected her because they saw her as maleable. Her background and history was perfect:
1. Sarah Palin was not well known -- therefore, they could easily mold her any way they wanted. No one would know she was just a puppet because no one knew her previously. 2. Sarah Palin is VAIN. She loved to enter beauty pageants. You don't enter beauty pageants unless you think you're beautiful. 3. Sarah Palin loves to be in the spotlight -- at the center of attention. Her dream was to be on television (as a reporter), where thousands if not millions would watch her. McCain and his Republican team were correct in their thinking that Sarah would be so flattered to be selected, that she would jump at the chance without batting an eye or thinking about the ramifications. Armed with a good analysis of the kind of person she is, McCain gambled on the fact that she would be so smitten that she would go along with anything they wanted, inlcuding memorizing all their talking points and becoming a mouth piece for the Republican Party line. She was a blank slate and they were able to fill it because of her vanity and her desire to be in the spotlight. She is being "USED" but she is also USING the McCain, the Republican Party and the American people to satisfy her own selfish and self-absorbed needs, desires and dreams. You cannot argue that out of all the field of Republican hopefuls for VP, McCain selected the best. He selected Sarah for all the reasons above. McCain says he puts "country first", but by choosing Palin as his running mate, it was clear that he put himself and his candidacy first.

Three Reasons to Put Sarah Palin on the Ticket

SarahPalinthreereasons

At this stage of the game, the vice-president potential's sole job is to get the presidential candidate elected. For that reason, the VP candidate is often chosen to bring in voters the head guy doesn't. So what does Palin bring to the table?

  1. She's mainline conservative.
Her stances on gay marriage, capital punishment, abortion and gun control will appeal to many of the conservatives McCain turned off and into Romney's arms. She could make them feel better about coming out to vote for McCain.
  2. She's young and female.
OK, that's two reasons. But she balances out some people's concerns with McCain's age (which frankly stem from having younger presidents for the last 16 years). And being female helps to neutralize the historic impact of either Obama or Clinton.
  3. She's charming.
Don't count out the importance of this. For many Democrats, the sheer fact that they liked Obama more than Clinton was enough to counteract any concerns over experience. McCain isn't known for his personal appeal, so she should be an asset on this point.

Three Reasons Sarah Palin Could Be a Bad Choice

SarahPalinthreereasons
So what are the potential pitfalls McCain has to watch out for now that he's chosen Palin over others?
  1. Lack of experience
Let's face it. Part of her being young is that she doesn't have a long political life. She's been governor less than two years and held only local positions before that. While she's immensely popular as governor, she doesn't have much of a track record. That makes her selection look like little more than a reaction to who the Democratic nominee is rather than a carefully considered choice.
  2. Location, location, location
Umm, she's from Alaska. Most of the country had never heard of her before Limbaugh mentioned her. She doesn't bring in a lot of automatic votes from her state and would require a lot of work to gain some shelf space in people's minds.
  3. She's charming
The last thing McCain needs or wants is someone who accents his weaknesses. His temper and sometimes gruff manner are a burr for him, and she might just make people notice it more.

The Best and Worst of Sarah Palin

There's a lot of pluses and minuses to any candidate for office - any office, not just the top ones in the land. So what do you see as being the single biggest plus or minus for Sarah Palin? The one thing that is swinging you to vote or not vote for her?

(Note, all comments are moderated and I don't allow foul language. But spicy is OK, and cranky most definitely!)

The best thing about Sarah is ...

jimmy says:

Well I believe she could do a better job than what we have in there now.If we survive this president somebody better tell him how to run a country.

toni v says:

sarah has the gift of relating to fellow americans.......she is definitely one of us and does h ave the intelligence (political and otherwise)..........to lead this country in the right direction for real change not the empty change of obamayomama

sidney says:

She won't be around long hopefully.

amandascloset0 says:

The biggest pluses for Palin as I see them are the very things that many say are her minuses. She's fresh, uncorrupted, her experience is actually far better than that of the current president elect. She's a woman, a pro lifer and a mother. These to me are values and virtues far beyond any you typically see in washington.

olatokunbo says:

She appears to be carrying the burden of her position quite well.

The worst thing about Sarah is ...

Dennis Arata says:

Palin is Dan Quayle in a dress. She refuses to answer crucial questions, maybe because she's incapable of
justifying the track record of her running mate or maybe because she just doesn't "get it" and is incapable
of understanding that people expect and demand answers to vitally important questions rather than this
good ol' girl image and the "Joe Six-Pack" references. Her attacks on Barak Obama and who he "hangs out
with" are inexcusable and clear evidence that she is incapable of conducting herself in a refined, proper
manner. God help us if the bimbo is ever entrusted with matters of international diplomacy because the
grossly superior intellect of the heads of state of other nations, particularly those who vehemently resent
the United States (which seems to be the majority), will manipulate her, chew her up and spit her out!!!!
The best thing "Quayle in a dress" could do is go back home and confine her involvement to her home
state...Bye Bye Sarah...

Joy says:

I am an average citizen, too busy with ordinary, daily life to follow politics and study global economy. I sure didn't see this financial crisis coming. But I am just an average citizen. My job doesn't include ensuring the health of our economy. Unfortunately, too many of our elected officials were too out of touch, uninformed and simply not smart enough to see it coming either. I get that Palin gets how we feel. But what I don't get is what she is going to do anything about it. How does she plan to bring about the kinds of reform and change her team of "Mavericks" promises? Really, they haven't said much, not anything concrete, intelligent or well thought out. I guess there are people who will never get tired of her slogans, folksy tone and attractiveness, which happen to come with lack of information. But I am tired of politicians saying we are going to be alright when they can't produce a single evidence of how. Even my four year old demands, "how?" How Sarah? How?

Louis_Dubois says:

If you vote this ticket you dont care about America.
NEITHER READY TO LEAD.

slin says:

She does not bring anything politically strong.

Of course then again neither does Obama, really what change is he making again?

Oh taxing oil companies, oh wait, that raises oil prices for us! Wow! Wonderful idea, brovo that is exactly what I thought this country needed.

Oh wait...

Terri says:

I like Sarahs anti-political stance and her history of cleaning up political injustice. Maybe she can clean up DC with all that political cheerleading she give McCain? That's what she reminds me of, an overgrown cheerleader. Nothing concrete comes out of her mouth. I'm still undecided. After the last debate I'm swaying Democrate.

Palin was a member of the Wasilla, Alaska, city council from 1992 to 1996 and the city's mayor from 1996 to 2002. Thumbs Up or Down?

There were pros and cons to any candidate McCain could choose. But what do you think about Sarah Palin as an option?

Is Sarah Palin a good choice for McCain's running mate?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes, she has what he needs to win.

amandascloset0 says:

I think she truly had exactly what he needed as a running mate. I believe that the areas where I wasn't sure on Mccain are the very areas I was sure on Palin. I honostly believe that the only reason they lost this election is because the media trashed her so badly and did not admit what they knew was the truth until late on election day. In addition to that the media Obama worshippers wouldn't air a good story on her it was always negative and based on hearsay by the public. Most of it sounded like a bunch of petty high school girl acusations.

suetv says:

Many have said, Sarah Palin is a breath of fresh air. This lady has such courage and strength that some men are afraid of her, and some women are jealous of her. Oh well.... The point is, her abilities and potential are what America needs, and what make her a good vice president.

mistee says:

yes. new ideas.

dude says:

claires_rose_arbor_shoppe she is a lot more qualified than Obama

dude says:

yes

No, she's more harmful than helpful.

bgamall says:

She was not a good choice. Sarah Palin is a Dominionist. That means she believes that you can further the kingdom of Christ by brute force. That is false thinking. Jesus said his kingdom was not of this world. His servants did not defend him against the Jewish authorities. Add to this the fact that the neoconservatives, or neocons, want to support Palin and they believe in taking over the resources and power of the world by force. The MERGER of Dominionism and Neoconservatism is simply unacceptable and could lead to World War 3. Please wake up Squidsheeples!!!!

sidney says:

Sarah Palin was the worse possible choice. Anyone would have been better. The election became theatre, a charade because of her. McCain could have taken Americans seriously and picked someone like Kay Bailey Hutchinson. Instead he insulted us with this incredible bimbo. While she was comedic, she was equally painful to watch. With her every word, we held our breath. Now that we can breathe again, I hope she never returns to national politics.

smarter voter says:

McCain is a little nuts with a lot of anger. He snaps like Cheney, yelling obscenities. Between his hot head and Palin's incompetence, I feel sorry for you idiot supporters. Our country is at stake and those two cannot handle it.

john says:

She is a moron. She is not capable for a major, much less, a vice president. She does not represent Alaska, and even more, she does not represent the majority of this country. She is just another spoiled rich brat clueless of politics.

john says:

He needs a politican, not a middle aged cheerleader.

More on the Campaign, the GOP and the Race for History

Where She Stands

We know the vice-presidential candidate's main job is to parrot the party line laid out by the presidential candidate. But, she's at least had her own opinion up to now ...

Energy Policies
Wants to convince the rest of the nation to open up ANWAR

War in Iraq/Terrorism
Has no public stance as yet, but her oldest child joined the Army in Fall 2007. He just shipped out on Sept. 11.

Immigration
No recorded stance as yet. Not exactly the biggest issue in Alaska.

Economy
Again, not much to figure out here yet.

Health Care
Opposes more federal funding for health care; is for more flexibility in federal regulations to allow for more competition.

Gay Rights and Abortion
(Normally, I wouldn't include these as - despite being a Christian - I think they have no place in a political platform. But people think they do.)
Strongly pro-life, in fact, she's a member of Feminists for life. Also against gay marriage.

Although Heart doesn't like it associated with her

Palin earned the nickname "Barracuda" some time ago, which led the GOP to use the Heart classic during the convention. Heart promptly sent a cease-and-desist letter, a missed marketing opportunity for them, if you ask me.

All About Being Vice-President

The Vice President of the United States is the holder of a public office created by the United States Constitution. The vice president, together with the President of the United States, is indirectly elected by the people through the Electoral College to a four-year term. The vice president is the first person in the presidential line of succession, ascending to the presidency upon the death, resignation, or removal of the president.

Under the Constitution, the vice president is President of the Senate. By virtue of the vice president's role as President of the Senate, he or she is the nominal head of the United States Senate. In that capacity, the vice president is allowed to vote in the Senate, but only when necessary to break a tied vote. Pursuant to the Twelfth Amendment, the vice president presides over the joint session of Congress when it convenes to count the vote of the Electoral College.

While the vice president's only constitutionally prescribed functions, aside from presidential succession, relate to his role as President of the Senate, the office is now commonly viewed as a member of the executive branch of the federal government. The U.S. Constitution does not expressly assign the office to any one branch, causing scholars to dispute whether it belongs to the executive branch, the legislative branch, or both. The modern view of the vice president as a member of the executive branch is due in part to the assignment of executive duties to the vice president by either the president or Congress, though such activities are only recent historical developments.

The incumbent vice president is Joe Biden, previously the senior U.S. Senator from the state of Delaware, and a current member of the Democratic Party.

You really did pour a lot into this lens and it is great that so many people found it to learn from it. I have just published a lens on a similar theme but a lighthearted one -- have you seen the Sarah Palin Cabbage Patch Doll?

how can you say that sarah does not have the experience, she has more experience than Abama has or ever will,i can not believe half the contry can not see just how shaddy Abama is he will tell anyone who will listen what ever they want to hear,,,and if by some horrifing chance he wins he will do just the opposite and try his best to bury the country as deep as he can, so listen to Abama supporters get a grip on the facts only true vote is for John McCain and Sarah Palin ,,that is if you want things to get better , one thing I can asure you is that Abama does not care what your needs are

What Do You Think?

NOTE: As of Sept. 10, I am shutting down this discussion. No more comments will approved on this one. It's just a non-issue that distracts from what should be the real questions. However, I have left it up because I thought you might find the comments interesting. Thanks to those of you who have participated!

Palin's fifth child was due in mid-May and arrived early on April 18. When she had her last child, she was serving as mayor of Wasilla and was back at work the next day. She's indicated that she expects things to be no different with this child. Does this change the way McCain makes his choice? Should it matter that she'll be a new mother right as the campaign starts to take shape? Will it? Sound off below!!

Can a new mother be vice-president?

It's just another job. You got something against working mothers?

TerriLorah says:

Of course a new mother can be vice-president. if Cheney has time to go hunting, she certainly has time to take care of the kiddies and do the duties of a vp.

Kerry says:

If a man can have kids and be President, so can a woman.

Silver_Lotus says:

Absolutely!

Nate says:

Of course she can. Wonder where all the leftist liberals are today? You look at the oposition and it's plain to see, 30 years of womens rights don't mean squat to these folks!

Julie says:

Yes of course a new mother can be vice-president.

Oh no. She should be focusing on her new baby, not running for office.

gypsyman27 says:

Not in this case, her child is a special needs baby (downs syndrome) and she is obviously not the best parent in the world. Her 17 year old unmarried daughter is pregnant and she is supposedly a conservative republican. Teaching abstinance is obviously not working. Go home you silly trailer park trash. Gypsyman27

Concerned says:

No, because Sarah Palin is shortchanging her children and the American people, who should see her as the hypocrite she is. Our staggering problems here and abroad deserve someone else's attention, and her children and husband need her attention.

John says:

Sure she can but not this time!

mm says:

I think a new mother could be a vice president. I am concerned for her children as she has a 17 year old who is pregnant and a down's syndrome new-born. I think she needs to think about the choice she made.
My concern is her lack of experience in the arena she has been nominated for. NO immigration experience, NO foreign policy experience, she's only been out of the country once. Alaska does not have the problems that rest of the country does. She doesn't deal with immigration problems, unemployment problems, tax problems...it's a different world there.
She is a good governor for the state of Alaska, but does not have the
background to run America. I have to question McCain even more after
his choice. She is a distraction for the party, her life is a complete
soap opera, and while maybe that is America. I do not want this as the
background for the vice president. McCain is 72 and doesn't really seem
to be totally with it, there is a bigger possibility she could be at the helm.
the situation

christa says:

i think it is crazy...her baby was born almost a month early AND with downs syndrome. the only way you can justify her return to work after 3 days PPD is to say that her husband will be raising the kids. they obviously haven't been doing a good job. why would you want to miss out on your child's life anyway? the crux of the matter is this - 1) you just had a baby and your body needs to recover, 2) your newborn child (not to mention the other 4) need a mother (something a man can never do) and 3) your eldest daughter needs you right now as she is about to give birth. It is really a silly time of life for her to chose or accept to be on the presidential ticket. you know your time will be totally taken up - it is not a 9-5 job. there are weekends, days at a time and late evenings, not to mention all the stress and toll. i think she is being incredibely unrealistic and watch for her other 4 children to do crazy things as well.
