Sarastro - One Of The Most Unusual Restaurants In London!

Eating at Sarastro is an experience in every sense of the word!

Situated right in the heart of London's Theatreland/Covent Garden, the owners of Sarastro describe their establishment as a "theatrical restaurant". It's a description that somewhat understates what visiting Sarastro is all about!

The restaurant describes it's food as"Turkish oriented, broadly Mediterranean"...the food is good, but Sarastro is about a great deal more than just food!

Since 1996, Sarastro has been offering it's customers a unique dining experience, one which combines all the senses! If you love theatre, music and opera combined with good food served in dramatic and sumptuous surroundings, you'll LOVE Sarastro!

The interior of the restaurant is breathtaking with lavish and extravagant decor in rich, opulent colours and fabrics - there's even ten "opera boxes" for diners, each in a different style ranging from Gothic to Rococo!

The "opera experience" doesn't end there - twice a week, Sarastro offers it's diners live performances of opera and music by performers from the worlds leading opera houses while they eat!

The atmosphere and ambience at Sarastro is amazing!

There's nowhere quite like Sarastro - read on to find out more about this very individual London restaurant...

What Is Sarastro?

Sarastro is a theatrical restaurant in the heart of London's "Theatreland"

Sarastro is situated on the junction of Drury Lane and Kemble Street, behind the world famous Theatre Royal.

The restaurant is housed in a Grade II listed building which dates back to the Victorian era. Formerly a derelict shop, the restaurant was opened in 1996.

The exterior of the restaurant is a riot of colourful flowers and foliage which overflow onto the street and set the scene for what's inside.

Where Does The Name "Sarastro" Come From?

"Sarastro" is a character in the opera "The Magic Flute" by Mozart

Inside Sarastro

The interior of Sarastro has to be seen to be believed...

The interior of Sarastro is an enchanting and vivid mixture of colours, textures and styles.

Swirling fabrics in rich jewel colours, woodwork in gold, stunning wall murals and paintings (including some VERY risque paintings in the toilets!!!!!!), elegant and subtle lighting, flamboyant carvings, mirrors and statues set the theatrical scene.

There are two levels for diners. Downstairs are the usual tables, either individual or grouped together. Upstairs are ten opera boxes which overlook three sides of the restaurant. Each box is different - the "Royal" box has the best overall view of the entire restaurant and is situated in the middle at the far end of the restaurant where it overlooks pretty much everything. The other nine opera boxes are in a variety of styles ranging from Byzantine to English.

My Sarastro Experience!

What happened when I went to Sarastro!

My fiancee Paul is a BIG fan of Sarastro. Back before he and I met, when he was young, footloose, fancy free and had a large disposable income (!), he used to frequent Sarastro on a fairly regular basis.

I'd heard so many tales from him about how amazing the place was, I wanted to experience it for myself and so he took me there for my birthday.

We went to Sarastro for one of their "Opera Menu" matinees. This meant we got the WHOLE Sarastro experience - the restaurant, the food, the ambience and the live opera!

I'm not an opera fan and know very little about it, but I thought listening to some opera whilst having dinner would be a pleasant and unusual way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

When I walked into the restaurant my initial impression was "WOW"...I could have spent hours just looking around - it's amazing. Sheer opulence and fantasy, all colour and glitter and the epitome of pure Drama :)

We were shown to our seats by an attentive waiter. The opera performances get very busy as you can imagine, so it was a bit on the cramped side, but I had expected that. The food (which I've described further down the page) was good and plentiful and the other diners were friendly and chatty. The atmosphere was great as everyone was there for the same reason - the communal enjoyment of live music in some very interesting surroundings.

We were seated on the lower level, just by the stairs to the opera boxes. I thought this was a great place to sit as we seemed to have a bit more room than other parts of the restaurant...but there was a reason for this and at this point I hadn't realised what would happen later!

The music commenced with a very good string quartet, followed by the opera singers. A female and a male who sang solos and duets. It was an incredible experience to hear really good singers performing at such close quarters. I can't sing a note myself and so I'm always in awe of anyone who can hold a tune!

All was going well, until the male singer decided to serenade a female member of the audience...guess who he chose!

I'm a naturally shy person and there I was with this enormous man with the voice of an angel down on one knee in front of me, holding my hand and staring lovingly into my eyes.

My fiancee thought it was hilarious...I just wanted the ground to open up and swallow me :)

It got worse, next he wanted to dance with me! He kept trying to coax me off my chair to join the female singer who was already happily dancing around the restaurant with a male audience member who was clearly far more of an exhibitionist than me.

I'm introverted and I have two left feet. I can't dance to save my life and there was no way I was getting up. Eventually the poor man got the message and found a more adventurous lady!

I remained red faced for what seemed like hours :)

It was a fabulous experience though...would I do it again? You bet...I'd sit somewhere out of the way though :)

I'd love to show you some examples of what's on the walls in Sarastro's toilets, but Squidoo doesn't allow "X-rated" content - yes, the paintings are THAT "naughty"...if you're easily shocked, you'd better not look!

Sarastro Food

What sort of food do they serve at Sarastro?

I'd describe the food at Sarastro as Mediterranean/North African.

The owners describe it thus;
"Turkish-oriented, the food is broadly Mediterranean in style".

There's lots of fish and seafood, lamb, chicken, salads and vegetables, along with goodies such as borek (filled savoury pastries), gravlax (raw salmon appetiser) and Turkish desserts. They even cater to more "traditional" tastes by serving good old British fish and chips and pork sausages! There's also a limited selection of vegetarian dishes.

Sarastro offers both a set menu and an a la carte menu for dinner. The set menu will get you a three course meal (including a choice of starters and main courses) for £26.50 per person.

Their highly popular "Opera Menu" is available on Sunday afternoon and Sunday and Monday evenings. This costs £26.50 including dinner and includes an Opera Caberet and String Quartet.

When I went there, we had the Opera Menu which was varied and interesting. A selection of hors d'oeuvres including borek, pate, pickles and vegetables, followed by a very tender slow cooked Lamb Shank with Mediterranean vegetables and fruit and coffee afterwards.

There's also a set "Tenor Menu" available at lunchtimes, which costs £14.50 for two courses.

The food is good without being spectacular, the portions are fairly generous and the prices are very reasonable considering that the restaurant is situated in a very busy and popular area of London!

I've eaten at Sarastro a few times in the past and had a great time each time. The food was lovely, the service unobtrusive yet attentive and the paintings in the loo would make anyone blush.

CDT says:

Sarastro is an amazing experience. The food may not be the best in the world, but unlike other restaurants Sarastro isn't just about food! The place is unique and individual and the prices are VERY reasonable considering the restaurant's location.

I didn't like it and here's why...

London Theatreland!

West End theatre is a popular term for mainstream professional theatre staged in the large theatres of London's "Theatreland".Christopher Innes, "West End" in The Cambridge Guide to Theatre (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1998), pp.1194?1195. ISBN 0521434378. Along with New York's Broadway theatre, West End theatre is usually considered to represent the highest level of commercial theatre in the English speaking world. Seeing a West End show is a common tourist activity in London.

Total attendances first surpassed 12 million in 2002, and in June 2005 The Times reported that this record might be beaten in 2005. Total attendance numbers surpassed 13 million in 2007,TV talent shows help West End shows to record audience - Telegraph setting a new record for the West End. Factors behind high ticket sales in the first half of 2005 included new hit musicals such as Billy Elliot, The Producers and Mary Poppins and the high number of film stars appearing. Since the late 1990s there has been an increase in the number of American screen actors on the London stage, and in 2005 these included Brooke Shields, Val Kilmer, Rob Lowe, David Schwimmer and Kevin Spacey.
